CUI Stunned By Late Comeback From Red Storm

The Rundown: Concordia fell in comeback fashion to Dixie State 3-2 inside CU Arena on Saturday, October 31.

By the Numbers: The Eagles were up two sets to one and held a sizable lead in set four.  Dixie State dominated the match from that point and finished off the win.  Rachel Flynn had an outstanding night with 18 kills while hitting .341.  Hannah Andrews added 12 and Ellie Ladensack had eight.  Amber Rose, Kyra Auten, and Andrews all had three blocks.

The Difference: CUI's sideout percentage was 35% or below in the final two sets.  There were outblocked 10-8 and hit .212 compared to .297 for DSU.  CUI had nine aces compared to five for the Red Storm, but DSU had 59 digs compared to 45 for CUI.

Critical Plays: After CUI jumped ahead 5-1 in set one, DSU came back to lead 6-5.  An overpass finished by Amber Rose put CUI ahead 15-12, forcing a DSU timeout.  Olivia Zolezzi served an ace to make it 21-16.  Three straight points by DSU forced an Eagle timeout.  Two kills by Flynn made it a 25-20 Flynn win.  Rose and Flynn combined on a block in set two to pull within one, 13-12.  The Red Storm got hot late and took the set 25-18.  Flynn sent one through and it was 8-4 Eagles early in game three.  Concordia never relinquished and held a solid lead throughout, taking it 25-19 on a Rose kill.  CUI came out hot to a 4-0 set four lead.  After growing the lead, DSU pulled to 14-11, forcing a CUI timeout.  They tied the game at 17 and ran away 25-18.  It was 6-0 Red Storm before CUI got on the board in set five.  CUI was never able to recover and fell 15-8. 

What it Means: Concordia fell to 13-11 and 9-6 in the conference, while DSU remained hot at 14-8 and 11-3 in the PacWest.

Up Next: The Eagles final home game is slated for Thursday, November 5 at 7 pm against Azusa Pacific.
