Eagles Head Coach Trevor Johnson Accepts Top Assistant Position At Baylor

Newly hired Baylor head volleyball coach Ryan McGuyre announced the hiring of his two full-time assistant coaches Friday, January 16. McGuyre promoted Samantha Erger, the director of BU volleyball operations to full-time assistant, while naming Trevor Johnson from Concordia University-Irvine as his top assistant.
Johnson launched the Concordia men's volleyball program, whom he guided to the 2013 NAIA National Championship in their first season of existence. Johnson also spent two seasons as an assistant coach under former women's volleyball coach Dan Fisher (2011-2012). As a result of his 2013 men's volleyball championship, Johnson was selected NAIA Coach of the Year, NAIA All-Tournament Coach, and MAMVIC National Coach of the Year.
Most recently, Johnson was the head coach of the women's program the last two seasons. His teams won two GSAC Championships, going 61-7 in two seasons and they were 28-2 in the GSAC. In 2013 they advanced to the NAIA Semifinals and lost in the NAIA Quarterfinals this season.
"I'm very appreciative of Concordia for giving me a shot," Johnson said. "I want to thank Dr. Kurt Krueger, Dr. Mary Scott, Dr. Gary McDaniel, and Dave Bireline for trusting in me to run the program, and for allowing me to develop as a coach and a person. I am forever grateful to Concordia for the opportunity I received. I will miss all the staff, coaches, and the girls. I wish Concordia nothing but the best in the future."
McGuyre, hired Dec. 24, reunited with Johnson Friday with the hire, as Johnson played for McGuyre at California Baptist from 2002-2005, and he served on his CBU staff as an assistant coach in two different stints from 2007-2011.
"I have been a part of seeing Trevor win a national championship as an athlete. We have won championships together as coaches, and Trevor has gone on to win more championships," McGuyre said. "Wherever he goes, the program wins. Having started a program from scratch and winning a championship as a head coach in its first year is incredibly impressive. His experience as a head coach has prepared him for the demands involved in leading our Bears to the highest levels of success."
Concordia assistant coach Brett Gillen has been named interim head coach.
"I want to thank Trevor Johnson for his Christian leadership and the time and effort he devoted to Concordia University," Concordia Athletic Director Dave Bireline said. "I understand this is a wonderful opportunity for him and his family, and we wish him all the success in the Big 12 and on his new journey."
