Eagles Start PacWest Conference Play With Win Over Dominican

Box Score The Rundown:  SAN RAFAEL, CA – The Concordia Eagles defeated the Dominican University Penguins 2-1 on Thursday, September 24th in overtime in San Rafael in the Eagles first action in the PacWest.

By the Numbers:  Kendall Reekstin started the scoring for the Eagles in the sixth minute when she scored from point blank range and beat the keeper left to put the Eagles ahead 1-0.  It was her second goal of the season.  Fifteen minutes into the second half, Mariah Meza of Dominican scored a goal to tie the game 1-1.  In the 93rd minute, Alexis Garcia-Irons scored her first goal of the season to clinch the win for the Eagles.

The Difference:  The Eagles significantly outshot the Penguins, 15-10, and primarily did so in the first half (9-4).  Natalie Werner made four shots along with Miranda Canales to put continued pressure on the Penguins goalkeeper.  Eagle's goalkeeper, Darby Clements, recorded six saves on the day.

Critical Plays:  Down the stretch of the second half, the Eagles had many shots on Penguins goalkeeper, Sylvanna Islas.  The Eagles were able to record three shots from Garcia-Irons, Werner, and Carly Mottram late in the second half to eventually lead to the game winning goal by Garcia-Irons in overtime.

"After we jumped out to the early lead we took our foot off the gas a little bit," CUI head coach Chris Gould said.  "Dominican fought back into the game.  I have to give credit to our team, they came together in overtime and finished off the game with a great goal from Alexis (Garcia-Irons)."

What it Means:  Following the win, the Eagles record improved to 2-1-2 overall, and 1-0-0 in the PacWest.

Up Next:  PacWest action continues for the Eagles on Saturday, September 26th at 11 am in Oakland, Calif. at Holy Names at Merritt College.  The Eagles will look to build momentum following the win and improve to 2-0-0 in the PacWest.
