Concordia celebrates seniors with 5-0 victory

The Women's Soccer team grabbed two wins on its final weekend off the year, defeating Dixie State and Academy of Art.

Thursday, after 88 minutes of regulation play, the game was looking like it would end how it had many times before for the Eagles - in overtime.

But in the 89th minute after a foul, Keely Abt sunk a free kick with only 38 seconds left to play to steal the win.

The Eagles were outshot 12-9 on the match and both teams' goalies posted four saves.

Saturday's affair against Academy of Art was not only the final game of the year, but Senior Day for six Eagles.

Prior to the match, Carly Mottram, Taylor Thurmond, Jazmin Alvarez-Medina, Lizette Luna, Alex Gerrain and Natalie Werner were celebrated for their careers at Concordia.

The celebration did not stop after the ceremony.

The Eagles' five goal game and shut out kept the celebration rolling throughout the match.

Abt added the first two goals of the weekend, continuing her offensive streak from Thursday's match.

The first was a penalty kick and the second was a shot to the bottom left off of the cross from Kryssa Johnson.

Johnson joined in again a few minutes later with a header off the corner kick from Olivia Khoury.

Natalie Werner wisped one on straight from the corner kick in the 81st minute, giving her one more goal to tack on to a stand out career.

Thurmond utilized her strong throw one last time for the Eagles, feeding one to Kara Gilchrist to extend the lead to five.

The 5-0 victory capped off the 2016 season, leaving the Eagles tied for third in the PacWest with an 8-2-3 conference record.

Mottram finished the 2016 season with one assist.

"Carly's journey had been one of true love, grit, and sacrifice," Coach Gould said. "She has given everything she has to this program and more. She is a true fighter and an amazing teammate."

Thurmond tested teams all year offensively. She scored one goal, dished out four assists and took 24 shots.

"Taylor's wears her fiery personality and competitiveness on her sleeve," Gould said. "She is the heartbeat of this soccer program and a big contributor to our family."

Alvarez-Medina led the PacWest in save percentage (.851) and had 62 in 2016. She was also named the PacWest defender of the week for her shut out performances against Dixie State and Academy of Art.

 "Jazmine has set the benchmark for goalkeeping in this program and arguable this conference. On a daily basis her abilities amaze both coaches and her teammates. Her work ethic and pursuit of making herself better will leave a lasting legacy within this program," Gordon said.

Luna landed two goals and one assist in her 2016 showing.

"Lizette is a warrior," Coach Gordon said.  "She has dealt with some of the toughest forwards in the country and has always dominated and shined. Her tenacity has helped establish a foundation of intensity in which CUI soccer plays with."

Gerrain started in all 17 games she played in this year, clocking 1526 minutes.

"Alex represents everything this soccer program is about," Gould said. "She is a total team player and leaves everything on the field every time she plays. She is a selfless teammate and person.

Werner started all 18 games she played in this year for the Eagles, dominating the field with her ball handling and strong shots. Even battling injuries, she scored five goals with five assists with 38 shots.

"Natalie will go down as one of the best players to ever come through the Concordia soccer program," Gould said.  She has taken her ability, leadership, and work ethic and has used it to selflessly serve her teammates."
