Women's Basketball beats the Sunbirds, wins second PacWest game

The Concordia Women's Basketball Team jumped to an early lead against Fresno Pacific Wednesday night and held onto it until the final minute to defeat the Sunbirds 66-57.

Judith Espinoza scored 13 points to lead the Eagles, and also had one assist, one steal and three rebounds. Zoe Scott-Goss gave Concordia 12 points, two steals and seven defensive rebounds. The Eagles also saw six points from five additional players and accumulated eight steals as a team.

Although the Sunbirds outshot the Eagle from the three-point line, Concordia shot 48.9 percent from the field, hitting 23-47 shots. In the first half, Concordia was 15-21 on field goals for an enormous 71.43 percent.

In the first quarter, the Eagles exploded to an early lead, going up by nine on the layup from Scott-Goss. Espinoza started out the second with a layup and a steal. Annie Studdert sank a jumper for the twelve point lead. Although the Sunbirds fought back, Elizabeth Rudd regained all momentum with a deep three. They continued the scoring streak to gain a 17 point lead. They closed out the first half up 36-24.

Concordia kept their composure in the third, never allowing the Sunbirds within more than eight points.

In the final 10 minutes of play, the Sunbirds surged back into the game with a seven point run, shrinking the Eagle lead to four. Concordia's composure closed out the game. The team nailed 6 of 8 free throws to close out at 66-57 win.

The Eagles improved their record to 5-4 on the year and 2-2 in the PacWest. The next face off for Concordia is at 5:30 on Saturday at CU Arena against Point Loma.
