Eagles Drop First Game At Hilo; Rally In Second

The Concordia Eagles split games between the Hawaii at Hilo on Tuesday night.  The Eagles lost the first outing, 4-7, and won the second, 5-2.  The Eagles advance their record to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the PacWest

In the first game, the Eagles recorded nine hits and five errors.

At starting pitcher was Spencer Moran who pitched through the seventh, struck out five batters, gave up two earned runs, and allowed 10 hits.  His record drops to 0-3 on the year.  Nick Boyett relieved Moran starting the eighth and gave up no earned runs and no hits.

The Eagles were first to score, when in the top of the second Kellen Richards grounded out to shortstop and drove John Bornhop in.  The Eagles led 1-0 until the Vulcans took advantage of a fielding error by Chad Whiteaker and tied it up, 1-1.

In the fourth, Kellen Richards singled to third base to once again drive in Bornhop and advance Hunter Holland to third.  Luke Hussung then singled through the left side to bring Holland in to score and extend the Eagles lead 3-1.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Vulcans surged after a leftfield single by Jonathan Segovia which drove in two runs.  Jacob Grijalva subsequently doubled to centerfield which allowed two more runs to score, giving the Vulcans a 5-3 advantage.  The Vulcans scored once more in the fourth and led 6-3 heading into the fifth.

Tino Leite doubled to left center in the fifth and drove in Ryan Land to close the Vulcan lead to two.  Leite was out on the play going for third.

The Vulcans scored once more in the eighth and struck out the last three CUI batters to defeat the Eagles, 7-4.

"In game one, we were as poor fundamentally as we could be.  We were all hoping we could get the job done instead of knowing we were going to get the job done.  There is a big difference there," said Eagles head coach Joe Turgeon.

"When we decide as individuals and as a team that we are going to know or believe each guy is going to get the job done we will give ourselves better opportunities to be successful."

In the second game, the Eagles recorded 11 hits and one error.

On the mound, Collin Orellana started things off and pitched through seven innings.  He recorded one strikeout and allowed two earned runs on seven hits.  He improved his record to 1-1.  Garrett Kraemer came in as reliever in the eighth and recorded a strikeout and his first save of the season.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the second after Joey Thompson singled to left field and drove in Hunter Holland

John Bornhop scored on a balk in the third to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead.

The Eagles scored three in the eighth and extended their lead over the Vulcans.  Joey Thompson drove in Luke Hussung after a single to right field and was then batted in by Ryan Land after Land singled to right.  Land was caught stealing second base when Michael Nava advanced home on the throw, putting the Eagles ahead 5-0.

In the bottom of the eighth the Vulcans scored a pair of runs after a double down the left field line and a wild pitch by Garrett Kraemer; however, the Eagles lead was too lard and the Eagles won, 5-2.

"Game two was as tough as we have played all season as a team," Turgeon said.  "Collin Orellana pitched for us and attacked hitters with quality pitches.  He also fielded his position extremely well, which is spot lighted because of the type of offense Hilo plays."

"We played outstanding defense all around the diamond.  Offensively, we were facing, in my opinion, an above average pitcher and for the first time this year we were able to fight and grind for every pitch."

The Eagles will play the Vulcans on Wednesday, March 2nd in the final double header of their trip to Hilo starting at 8 pm PST.
