Concordia Splits With Trailblazers In Season Finale

The Rundown: The Concordia Eagles split the regular-season finale at Dixie State on 7-3 in 8 innings and 5-9 in St. George, UT.

Concordia 7, Dixie State 3

By the Numbers:  Charlotte Foster and Nicole Chavez homered, and Foster also doubled.  Alyssa Yglesias led CUI with four singles and Grayson Harvey held Dixie State to three runs on three hits in eight innings.

The Difference:  CUI broke open the pitching duel with four runs in the top of the eighth to secure Harvey's 21st win after Foster's three-run blast.

Critical Plays:  DSU hit a two-run homer to jump ahead in the first.  Foster doubled in the third and a run scored on a groundout to make it 1-2.  Chavez hit a one-out solo homer in the fourth to tie the game.  The Trailblazers took advantage of an error to go back up 3-2 in the fifth.  Ryann Ferguson singled in the fifth, Yglesias followed with a single, and a sac fly from Amy Eilefson tied the game again at three.  Chavez walked to leadoff the top of the eighth, and after a passed ball and walk, a run scored on a sac fly from Ferguson.  Yglesias singled again and Foster homered to left center for the 7-3 edge.

Concordia 5, Dixie State 9

By the Numbers:  Jasmin Dresser homered, and Ryann Ferguson and Hannah Howell both doubled.  Susana Gurney took the loss for CUI, finishing 8-4 on the year.  BethAnn McCann pitched the last five innings effectively.

The Difference:  The Trailblazers scored seven runs through the first two innings and CUI could not recover.

Critical Plays:  Three walks and three singles plated four for DSU in the first and four singles and an error made it 7-2 after two, as Eilefson and Dominique Espinoza combined with Howell's double in the top of the second for two Eagle runs.  Dresser homered to center to lead off the sixth and Howell singled and moved around the bases on wild pitches.  Ferguson doubled to right center to start the seventh, moved on a groundout, and scored on Foster's sac fly.

"We swung the bats well again today and had two really competitive games," CUI head coach Crystal Rosenthal said.  "I'm extremely proud of my team this year, I think we showed we can compete in this conference.  I'm going to miss our seniors as their contributions to our program are not measurable and the future is bright for Eagle softball."

What it Means:  Concordia ends the regular season 42-13 and 23-9 in the PacWest, finishing in fourth place.

Up Next:  The Eagles have a solid group returning and will join with the newcomers looking forward to 2017.
