Eagles Dominate SLC Tournament For Fourth Straight Conference Title
The Rundown: The #2 ranked men's lacrosse team used big offensive runs and dominated the face-off X to lock up their fourth straight SLC Conference Title over the weekend. In the semifinals, the Eagles used a 10-2 first quarter run to knock off Northern Arizona 23-8. In the finals on Sunday, CUI dominated the 2nd quarter in similar fashion, outscoring Cal State Fullerton 8-2 and coasted to a 14-8 win. Â
The Difference: The Eagles dominated at the face-off X behind the duo of Bryant Hernandez (81%) and Roman Smith (70% – 2g,1a). The excellence in draw control led to big offensive runs in both games that proved too much for the opposition.
"Our focus in the tournament was on execution and tempo and we were successful in both facets," CUI head coach Ryan Brent said, "It says a lot about the stability and success of our program that we have been able to put ourselves in position to win four conference titles in a row."
What it means: With the win, the Eagles continue their dominance over the Southwestern Lacrosse Conference – winning four straight league titles. Despite being ranked #2 nationally for most of the season, the Eagles wound up with the #3 seed going into the MCLA National Championships next week.
Up Next:Â CUI will take on fellow unbeaten Montana State, the Champions of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse Conference, in the first round of the MCLA Tournament Monday May 9th at 11:00am at UC Irvine.
