IRVINE, CALIF.— On a sunny Saturday afternoon, the Concordia Women's Soccer Team (6-4-1, 5-2-0 PWC) defeated Biola University (9-3-1, 5-3-1 PWC) in a PacWest conference match-up. The 1-0 victory came late in the game courtesy of the Eagles' leading scorer, Carmany Jones. With this win, Head Coach Chris Gould claimed his 100th victory with the women's soccer program. Just a few weeks ago, Gould earned his century mark with the men's program.
Both teams took the pitch with intensity. Concordia attacked first, posting a shot by Jones and a header shot by Megan Hussey. Soon after, Biola claimed possession in its offensive third with a shot and two corner kicks.
By the end of the first half, Biola recorded three shots while Concordia recorded four.
The start of the second half was a repeat of the first period. The teams battled with intensity back and forth across the pitch with occasional offensive breakthroughs.
In the 65th minute, Biola came close to the back of the net when Paula-Marie Labate collapsed the keeper and fired a shot that was blocked by Eagles' defender Nicole Font. Labate shot the rebound that was saved by CUI keeper Kaelyn Whitcomb. Labate drove the second rebound over the top of the net, leaving the scoreboard empty.
"I knew the girls were behind me trying to help and clear the ball out," Eagles keeper Whitcomb said. "They were working hard trying to save the ball so I was diving all over the place working hard for them".
With five minutes left in the game, Keely Abt flicked the ball forward off a pass from the midfield. Jones got to the ball, touched it through the defenders and drew the BU keeper toward her. The freshman drilled a shot over the keepers hands and into the back of the net, giving Concordia the 1-0 lead and the win over Biola.
The Eagles return to the field on October 26th in San Diego, Calif. Kickoff is scheduled for 1p.m. against Point Loma.
