Box Score Concordia Women's Volleyball swept the Silverswords of Chaminade University Saturday afternoon in its second straight win. The 3-0 victory puts the Eagles at 6-8 on the season.
Kyra Auten led the offense with an impressive .583 hitting percentage on eight kills and only one error. Auten's play was felt defensively, too. The middle blocker posted six blocks and a dig.
Hailey Gaines and Rachel Flynn produced from the pins. Gaines buried 10 swings for a .391 hitting percentage. Flynn found success on 10 attacks, added nine digs with two blocks.
Despite falling behind in set one, a four point run forged by Maddie Deters' serve set the Eagles down 9-10. Then, a Gaines kill evened the score. With momentum of their side, the Eagles pushed to game point and Auten put away the set-point kill.
In set two, early runs from the Eagles and Silverswords shifted the lead back and forth until Concordia took control of the game after a six point run highlighted by kills from Gaines and Riley Gill. CUI maintained control of the set and finished strong by winning six of the final seven points. A block from Amber Rose and Cindy Tran secured set two and the 2-0 advantage.
In the final set, Chaminade jumped to an early lead for the third consecutive game. With a 5-0 lead, the Eagles called a timeout. The Silverswords earned two more points before Tran halted the scoring spree with a kill. Concordia crept back into the match and slowly slithered into an 18-18 tie. After evening the score again at 21, Gaines, Flynn and Tran rallied together to reach match point. A Chaminade error gave Concordia the win and sweep.
The Eagles begin a three-match road series October 11th in San Rafael, Calif. against Dominican University. The match starts at 7 P.M. Following the game against the Penguins, Concordia faces PacWest opponents Academy of Art and Notre Dame de Namur.Â
