Sunday, the Men's Water Polo Team competed for a fifth place finish at the WWPA Tournament. After dropping the opening match to Airforce Academy, the team bounced back to defeat Fresno Pacific to make this game. The Eagles took down Santa Clara for the second time this year by one goal, winning 9-8 in La Jolla, Calif.
The Broncos struck first with a goal, but Daniel Castagnola fired back to keep the game tied. With 36 seconds left on the clock in the first, Santa Clara took the 2-1 lead, but not for long. Angel Rojas scored the final goal of the first on the pass from Patrik Zsiros.
Zsiros produced again for the Eagles in the second with a successful shot for the 3-2 advantage and Messan Moore extended with another goal. The Broncos battled back with two consecutive, but Rojas responded with his second goal of the day to keep the Eagles' slim lead.
Spencer Hosch started out the third quarter for the Eagles with a quick goal, but Santa Clara's back-to-back goals evened the score at six apiece. Zsiros and Joshua Mundell worked up a duo of goals to reclaim an 8-6 lead entering the final 10 minutes of play.
In the fourth quarter, the Broncos fought to add two goals and tie the game 8-8. Hosch delivered one final goal and the Eagles held Santa Clara off the remainder of the game to secure the 9-8 win.
The Eagles finished fifth in the tournament with a 4-4 conference and 12-12 overall record and won eight more games than they did in 2016. Â
