Jones’ hat trick propels Eagles to 7-1 win

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. — On Sunday afternoon, the Concordia Women's Soccer team (9-6-2, 8-4-1 PWC) played its second game in two days and its fourth of the week. Despite tired legs, The Eagles conquered Academy of Art University (1-16-1, 1-12-0 PWC) in their last regular season match, 7-1.

A first half hat trick by Carmany Jones and a goal by Katie Gast gave CUI a comfortable lead at the break. In the second half, goals by Cienah Reed (2) and Olivia Khoury seal the deal for the Eagles.

The match started immediately in favor of Concordia with a corner kick in the second minute and a shot three minutes later from Marianna Maldonado

Maldonado had control of the ball in the eighth minute. She played a pass to Jones who was at the top of the 18 yard box. Jones received the pass and drilled a shot into the left post netting to start the Eagles offensive momentum.

A few Concordia shots later, Jones found the ball at her feet once again. The freshman beat the defender, took the ball towards goal, and finished into the near left post. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead after 22 minutes.

After a brief period of offensive attacks from the Urban Knights, CUI struck again. A foul called against ArtU left a free kick on the foot of Isabella Angotti-Jones. The defender sent a lofted ball into the six yard box where Gast tapped it into the left post netting, recording her fourth goal of the season.

In the 43rd minute, Jones' first shot was saved by ArtU's goalkeeper Maggie Alikpala. She then got on the end of the rebound, and sent her second shot into the left side of the net. With this hat trick in the first half, Jones leads the Eagles with nine goals on the season. At halftime, The Eagles led 4-0.

The second half began like the first, with offensive intensity from Concordia. In the 43rd minute, Megan Hussey played a ball to Reed right in front of the goal. Reed knocked it into the right post netting for the first goal of the second half.

In the 70th minute, Reed notched her second goal which was assisted by Jones. Receiving a pass in front of the goalkeeper, Reed crushed the ball into the goal marking her third of the season.

Fifteen minutes later, the Urban Knights got on the board with a goal from a shot into the near right post.

The Eagles answered back on with thirty seconds left in the match. Khoury scored her first goal of the season. Maldonado with her second assist of the game, played a ball to Khoury from the left side of the field. Khoury drilled a shot near post and gave the Eagles a 7-1 win.
