Concordia Women's Basketball hosted its PacWest opener Friday night inside an energetic CU Arena. The Eagles faced former GSAC opponents, the Eagles, of Biola University. Following a 3-0 streak in Hawaii, Concordia looked to extend to four-straight conference wins. Despite earning the first half lead, Concordia couldn't defeat Biola, falling 66-55.
The first half was a close contest until the Eagles' hard fought defensive press and offensive diversity paid off and pushed them ahead late in the second quarter. Kennedy Fulcher found the first basket of the game and Portia Neale posted the second. Biola evened the score both times, and after a scoreless few minutes, Fulcher gave the Eagles a 6-4 lead before Michaela Vanderklugt added two more. Concordia held on for a 12-10 lead at the end of the first. In period two, the Eagles utilized their fast break to build a larger lead. Ahead by one, Vanderklugt, Reilly Walsh and Fulcher extended the lead to nine with 5:36 to play. Despite Biola's offense gaining ground, the Eagles held off their opponent to the half with a 30-21 lead.
Biola came out of the gate ready to start the third with a jumper from Tatum Brimley, but Fulcher's three-pointer energized the Eagles. Sopavy Seng then sank three free throws and assisted Fulcher for the 14 point advantage. Concordia continued to neutralize Biola with on ball pressure and a quick offense. But, Biola strung together a series of stops to cut Concordia's lead to eight at the end of the third quarter. Biola opened the final quarter with fight. The visiting team tallied 17 points within five minutes to steal the 56-49 lead. With the clock winding down, tried to reclaim the lead, but ultimately dropped the game.
Vanderklugt and Fulcher led the Eagles with 14 points. Friauf posted 13 points, eight rebounds and a block.
Up Next: Wednesday, the Eagles (5-3, 3-1 PWC) play Seattle Pacific at 6 p.m. in CU Arena for a non-conference matchup.Â
