The Eagles bounced back quickly in Saturday's double-header where they faced the team who had handed them their first loss of the season the night before. Concordia took game one by a score of 5-2, and lost in extra innings to #24 UC San Diego 7-6.
A strong pitching performance from freshman
Mike Killeen was just what the Eagles needed to keep the momentum on their side. Aside from a base hit in the first inning, Killeen was spotless through his first five innings.
The Eagles struck first in the bottom of the first, sparked by
Ryan Land who wore a pitch and was awarded first base.
Haloa Dudoit laid down a successful sacrifice bunt that advanced Land to second, and
Spencer Nielsen followed up with an RBI single to put the Eagles up 1-0.
The only bump in the road for Killeen came in the top half of the sixth inning, where he gave up two runs on three hits.
Concordia answered right back, starting with a leadoff homerun to right field off the bat of
Jair Donovan, the first of his career.
Bailey Collins followed up with a double, and a single from
Dillon Millar brought him in. The Eagles regained the lead at 3-2.
Back to back hits from Dudoit and Nielsen brought in another run for the Eagles in the bottom of the seventh, giving Nielsen his second RBI of the game.
Millar doubled with two outs in the bottom of the eighth, and a single from Tony Garcia would bring him in and give the Eagles a 5-2 lead over the Tritons.
Killeen finished his day going eight solid innings in which he allowed two runs on six hits while walking just one batter and striking out five, and with the win improved to 1-0 on the season.
Cade Temple came into the game in the ninth and sat the Tritons down in order, including one strikeout, for his first save.
Millar went 2-3 in the game with one RBI. Land and Nielsen both went 2-4, and Nielsen had two RBIs. Land and Dudoit each had a stolen base.
Freshman Carpenter Pagget started on the mound in game two for the Eagles and gave up the first run of the game by way of a UCSD homerun from Christian Leung.
Heading into the bottom of the second chasing one, Millar reached on a fielder's choice and was knocked in by a single from
Joey Thompson.
The long ball continued to be a problem for the Eagles as Pagget gave up two more in the top of the third, one of them being a three-run shot.
Collin Orellana took over in relief of Pagget in the top of the fifth inning, giving up one run, putting the Tritons up 6-1.
In the Eagles' half of the fifth, Collins put himself on base with a two-out single before he stole second. Dane Vande Gutche came to the plate and delivered a single up the middle that brought Collins in and gave the Eagles their second run.
With the second game of the double header being a shorter, seven-inning game, the Eagles had to act fast. Dudoit led off the bottom of the seventh with a base hit and he would advance on a single by Donovan, followed by a walk to Collins. Vande Gutche reached on a fielder's choice, with the out being made at second, that allowed Dudoit to score from third. A balk from UCSD's pitcher would allow Donovan to cross home plate, bringing to the score to 6-4. Millar would reach on an error, bringing in Vande Gutche. Garcia sent a double into left field to bring in Millar, and with that the game was tied at six a piece.
In the top of the eighth,
Jason McLellan was lifted for Temple who had closed out the previous game. Temple inherited bases loaded with one out and allowed a sacrifice fly that put the Tritons ahead 7-6.
The game would end with this score, and by the end of the day the Eagles sat at a 3-2 record.
Thompson went 3-3 in the game with one RBI, Dudoit went 3-5, and Donovan and Vande Gutche each went 2-4. Vande Gutche added two RBIs in the game. Collins and Millar each stole a bag.
The Eagles complete the four-game series on Sunday as they take on the Tritons in La Jolla at 1 p.m.
