Eagles Soar Over Hawks

The Concordia Women's Basketball Team picked up a win on the road on Saturday, defeating the Holy Names Hawks 57-42.
The first quarter got off to a slow start for both teams as defense dominated the first half of the quarter. Â A layup from
Alyssa Braun gave the Eagles a three-point lead at 4:55, putting them up 5-2. Â Two made free throws from
Montana Walters stretched the lead to eight and the first quarter ended with Concordia leading 15-7.
Braun got the scoring started in the second quarter for the Eagles with a layup assisted by Walters. Â
Portia Neale pushed through a foul to sink a layup at 7:24, and completed the three-point play by making a free throw to stretch the lead to 22-13. Â
Zoe Scott-Goss put the Eagles up by double digits with a layup of her own.
The Hawks battled back, chipping away at the Eagle lead. Â The first half finished with a score of 26-22 in favor of Concordia.
Neale stole the ball and drove it to the basket for a layup to begin the second half. Â A three from Walters sparked an Eagle run as
Judith Espinoza contributed by sinking two free throws and
Annie Studdert made a jumper at 5:11.  The Eagles continued to dominate at the free throw line as Neale added one more and Braun made three, and Espinoza made two.  Walters would make two of her own and stretch the Eagle lead to 47-28 with a minute left in the quarter.  Studdert gave the Eagles their largest lead at 21 with two free throws.  The quarter would end with Concordia leading 51-30.
The two highest scoring performances on the night came off the bench in Braun with 13 and Walters with 12. Â Neale contributed 10 points along with seven rebounds. Â
Ugochi Anudokem had an outstanding game defensively, grabbing 14 boards and one block.  Studdert added eight rebounds, seven points, and three assists.  Espinoza led the Eagles with five assists on the night.
The Eagles shot 60 percent from the free throw line, going 21-35.
Concordia now sits at a 10-14 record overall and 8-10 in PacWest play.  The Bay Area road trip continues on Monday night as the Eagles take on Academy of Art in San Francisco at 5:30 p.m.
