Water Polo defeats Villanova, falls to CMS at Lancer Invitational

Concordia Women's Water Polo split on day one of the Lancer Invitational. The Eagles edged out Villanova 9-8 and fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 7-13.
Game 1
Kelley Geurts got the first goal for the Eagles, scoring with 3:16 left in the first. Villanova came back quickly with a goal, but Concordia claimed the lead from Corbin Brick's successful shot. The Wildcats scored a goal at the buzzer to tie the game 2-2.
The Eagles went ahead big in the second quarter with five goals, four more than the Wildcats. The scoring came from Jade Jette, Shannon Graham, Geurts and Lindsey Heaney.
The third was tightly fought. Both teams scored two goals to give the Eagles a 9-5 advantage entering the final period.
Villanova crept up on Concordia. They shut the Eagles out and scored three. Concordia held on to claim a 9-8 win.
Geurts scored three goals on four shots. Graham had two goals and six shots. Concordia out shot the Wildcats 30-26. Madelynn Knust earned the win with eight saves.
Game 2
The Eagles fell behind early against Claremont. The team went down 4-1 after two periods of play. Claremont pulled away in the third with six goals.
Concordia had a surge of scoring in the fourth quarter with five goals. Jette started the comeback and Ramsie Haskell and Lindsey Heaney kept it going. Elena Iaogawa added two more, but Claremont's Claire Baxter secured their win with three more goals.
Concordia was out shot 23-15. Iaogawa led the team with two goals and three steals.
The Eagles return to action at the Lancer Invitational Saturday against Azusa Pacific University at 10:15 a.m. They finish up the tournament against the Bulldogs of Redlands University at 4:15 p.m.
