Eagles Complete Sweep with Eight Run First Inning

The offense exploded on Monday as the Eagles completed the four-game sweep of the Hawaii Hilo Vulcans.  With the help of an eight run first inning, Concordia won the game by a score of 14-6.

Ryan Land got the party started with a leadoff walk to begin the bottom of the first.  He stole second, putting himself in scoring position for Haloa Dudoit.  Dudoit knocked him in with an RBI double to right center.  Jair Donovan stepped to the plate next and drew a walk.  Bailey Collins was hit by a pitch, bringing his total to four in the series, and this loaded the bases for Hunter Holland.   A wild pitch brought Dudoit around to score before Holland crushed a double that brought in two more, putting the Eagles up 4-0.  With a runner on and one out, Dillon Millar tripled to bring in another run.  Joey Thompson stepped up next and reached on an error and knocking in a run.  Land came to the plate for the second time in the inning and legged out a triple, knocking in Thompson.  Dudoit followed with an RBI single to give the Eagles an 8-0 lead after one inning.

Collin Orellana got the start on the mound for Concordia and held the Vulcans scoreless until the fourth inning.  Hilo was able to bring one across in the top of the fourth, and the Eagles quickly answered back.

Dudoit led the inning off with a single and then advanced to second on an error by the Hilo pitcher.  With two outs, Holland singled to knock in Dudoit and give Concordia a 9-1 lead.

Orellana's day would be over after five innings, finishing the day giving up one run on four hits while recording four strikeouts.

Isaiah Bettencourt took over on the mound in the top of the sixth, giving up a run on three hits before a ground ball set up a double play to get them out of the inning.

Land led off the Eagles' half of the sixth inning with a single.  Dudoit drew a walk and was thrown out a second as Donovan reached on a fielder's choice.  Collins sent a ground rule double over the wall in right center to knock in Land.  Holland was hit by a pitch, loading up the bases with one out for Dominic Castro.  Castro singled up the middle to drive in two, and then Millar sent a sacrifice fly to center field to bring in a run and extend the Eagle lead to 13-2.

The Vulcans struck for four in the top half of the seventh to cut into the Eagle lead.

Jack Ruegge came in in relief in the top of the eighth and sat the Vulcans down in order.

The Eagles added one more run in the bottom of the eight.  Holland reached on a drop third strike and would come around to score on an error.

Morgan Brannock came in to close out the game in the top of the ninth and faced the minimum, including two strikeouts.  Holland ended the game with a bang, reaching over the fence in foul territory to make the catch.

Orellana earned his first win of the season as the Eagles improved to 7-4 in PacWest play.

Dudoit led offensively, going 3-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two RBIs.  Holland went 2-4 at the plate, a double and a single, with two RBIs and three runs scored.  Land also went 2-4 with an RBI, stolen base, and three runs scored.

The Eagles now travel to Fresno to take on the Sunbirds of Fresno Pacific.  The four game series begins on Friday at 2 p.m.
