Softball Recap: Kretschmar hits a 10 inning walk-off, Harvey strikes out 14

The Eagles and Penguins put on a PacWest performance to open up the week. The two teams duked it out in a doubleheader, including a 10 inning game. Part one of the day was highlighted by a closely fought pitching showdown between Grayson Harvey and Katelyn Harden.

5963Harvey commanded the mound throughout the first game, going 10 innings and allowing only three hits in the shut out. Although the Eagles didn't post a run until the 10th inning, Harvey held them in the game with her presence and 14 strikeouts.

Harden was effective for Dominican University of California as well. She kept the Eagles off the board for nine innings, allowed just five hits and had 10 strikeouts.

While the two teams were unable to put up runs at the plate, their defensive play was nothing short of spectacular. The infields were crisp and the outfields on the move with diving catches, including a layout snag from left fielder Nicole Chavez during international tiebreaker play.

The Eagles finally struck in the 10th when Haylee Kloosterman was placed on second base because of the tiebreaker rule. With wheels on the bases and no outs, Concordia capitalized. Lauren Rodriguez rocketed a grounder to the short stop and Kloosterman darted for third and squeezed in with the slide safely. Sarah Kretschmar came up clutch next with a walk-off single down the left field line to end the two hour and 44 minute battle.

After a quick break, the teams turned around for part two.

BethAnn McCann earned the win after the Eagles secured an 8-4 victory. McCann struck out two and allowed three earned runs during her seven innings in the circle.

In the first, McKinsey Thorpe walked and then slid safely into second. Amanda Gjertsen's double down the left field line brought in the first Eagle run. In the top of two, the Penguins strung together a few hits to tally two. Gjertsen opened up the third with a single to right field and Alyssa Turner bumped Ashley Balestreri, who was in to pinch run, over to third with a sacrifice bunt. Mackenzie Graham laid down another bunt to squeeze Balestreri in safely to even the score at two.

The Eagles gave McCann five security runs in the fifth. Lead off hitter Ryann Ferguson found her way on with one out with a single to left center. McKinsey Thorpe came through next with a single to the short stop and Gjertsen loaded the bases with a hit to right field. Two Penguin errors and a grounder from Kretschmar led to two Eagles crossing the plate for the 5-2 lead. First baseman Amy Eilefson finished the scoring spree with a two RBI double to left field.

Heather Nonora started out the fifth with a single and advanced to second on an error. Gjertsen scored Nonora with a RBI single up the middle to give the Eagles eight. In the top of the seventh, Dominican dug deep and attempted to stage a comeback. Although they posted two runs, McCann closed out the game.

With 10 games remaining in PacWest play, Concordia is 29-12-2 and 15-7-0 in conference. Friday, they go up against the Trailblazers of Dixie State at Eagles Field. The doubleheader begins at 2 p.m.
