Softball seniors seal their careers off with a win over APU

Saturday, the Eagles wrapped up the 2017 season with a final home double header against 5996
Azusa Pacific University. Aside from an evenly matched conference challenge, the Eagles honored its four seniors for their careers at Concordia.

BethAnn McCann, Lauren Rodriguez, Nicole Chavez and Hanna Miller played their final ball game at Eagles Field. Prior to the games, the four were celebrated for their accomplishments on and off the field with their friends and families.

The Eagles sent the four out in style with two closely contested games and a final victory.

Grayson Harvey started game one and gave up seven hits and three runs. The Eagles were just slightly behind with six hits and two runs.

After allowing the Cougars to score on a wild pitch, the Eagles got one of their own on a wild pitch. Azusa Pacific posted two more runs but the Eagles fought back with one in the fifth. McKinsey Thorpe singled to right center and Amanda Gjertsen drew a walk. Amy Eilefson singled to center to load the bases and Chavez came through with a RBI fly ball to left field.  Although the Eagles nearly tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, they were unable to take over the game.5993

Harvey struck out nine during her seven innings in the circle. Thorpe went 3-4 and scored two runs.

In the second game of the day, and final game of the season, the Eagles called on McCann.

Concordia gave the senior early cushion, scoring three runs in the first two innings. Ryann Ferguson opened up the Eagle offense with a rip to left center for a double and Gjertsen brought them both across on a deep homer. In the second, Sarah Kretschmar singled up the middle to knock Eilefson in.

The Cougars went on to post one run in the third and fourth, but Concordia clutched up again with two more runs.

Thorpe led off with a base hit and moved to second when Gjertsen was hit by a pitch. Mackenzie Graham laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the two runners to scoring position. Chavez then put down a choppy bunt to squeeze Thorpe in safely. Eilefson came through again with a RBI single to the outfield.

Ahead 5-2, the Eagles enetered the bottom of the seventh. The Cougars put together four 5995hits and scored one run to cut the Eagle lead to one. With only one out and runners on, senior McCann closed out her career battling. She forced a pop up and a sharp line drive for her 15th win of the season and final of her career.

McCann pitched over 135 innings this year with 61 strikeouts and a 2.17 ERA. Chavez tallied 30 hits, two homers, 21 RBI and played in 45 games. Miller posted a .255 batting average with 24 hits, nine runs and three doubles. Rodriguez gave the Eagles 13 runs, 21 hits, four doubles, three home runs and a .991 fielding percentage.
