Holland and Martin's Heroics Earn the Eagles a Win

The Eagles split Tuesday's double header with California Baptist, taking game one 7-6 by way of a walk-off, before dropping game two, 5-0.

Game one: CUI – 7 CBU – 6

The Lancers seemed to control game one out of the gate.  CBU struck for four runs in the top of the first off of Eagles starter, Alex Zalasky.

After giving up one more run in the top of the second, Zalasky settled into a rhythm to pitch four more scoreless innings.  He finished his day with three strikeouts in six innings.

The Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the second.  Bailey Collins led off the inning with walk.  A double from Hunter Holland moved Collins to third and put both in scoring position.  Chad Whiteaker came to the plate next and sent a single into left center to bring in both run and cut the deficit to three.

A diving catch from Jair Donovan in the top of the third helped hold the Lancers.

The Eagles continued their strong at bats in the bottom of the third as Haloa Dudoit singled into right to lead off the inning.  Collins drew a walk to put two on with one out.  Holland came in clutch as he crushed a ball over the left field fence to tie the game at five a piece.

Jason McLellan took over on the mound in the top of the seventh and ended the inning by picking off a runner at first.

Tony Garcia started the Eagle's half of the seventh with a single up the middle and a sacrifice bunt from Chris Martin moved him to second.  A groundout moved him to third and he then scored on a wild pitch to give the Eagles a 6-5 lead.

The Lancers tied the game, 6-6, in the top of the eighth inning before Garcia picked off the go-ahead run on third in a heads up play to end the CBU threat in the inning.

Carpenter Pagett came in in relief with one out in the top of the ninth and struck out both batters that he faced, sending the tie game into the bottom of the ninth.

Dillon Millar got things started with a double down the left field line.  A sacrifice bunt from Garcia moved him to third.  With a full count on the next batter, Martin, CBU called for a pitching change.  On the first pitch from the new pitcher, Martini laid down a perfectly executed squeeze bunt to bring in the winning run in walk-off fashion.

Holland led the Eagle offense with two hits and three RBI.  Dudoit's single in the third inning extended his hit streak to 10 games.

Pagett picked up the win, giving him a 3-2 record on the season.

Game two: CUI – 0 CBU - 5

CBU scored first again in game two, striking for one in the second, three in the third and one in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead.

Donovan tripled to lead off the bottom of the fourth but was left stranded.

Jack Ruegge came on in relief of Morgan Brannock in the top of the fifth and sat the Lancers down in order in the fifth and sixth.

Ryan Land recorded two hits in the game as Dudoit extended his hit streak to 11.

The Eagles celebrate Senior Day on Wednesday in the final game of the 2017 season.  They will be honoring their five seniors in a pregame ceremony beginning at 2:30 p.m.
