Water Polo Weekend Recap: Eagles grab three wins

The Eagles had a busy weekend of Water Polo, including a home matchup against the UCSD Tritons and a four game Inland Empire Classic. After five games, Concordia captured three wins and two losses.

Game 1: UCSD 17, CUI 11

What happened: The Eagles jumped to an early 2-0 lead on goals from Angel Rojas, but the Tritons scored four straight to take over. Rojas added one more to end the first behind 3-4. Both teams posted three in the second, with goals from Spencer Hosch, Alfredo De La Mora and Joshua Mundell. In the third and forth, the Eagles were outscored 5-2 and 5-3 by UCSD.

Mundell scored three goals with five shots and Rojas had four goals and five shots. Messan Moore posted one goal and one steal.

Game 2: CUI 13, La Verne 11

What happened: Concordia came out strong in the Inland Empire Classic with a 13-11 win over La Verne. Jake Snyder, Rojas, and Mundell helped Concordia secure a 4-2 lead in the first quarter. Jacob Saduddin and Nick Walker scored one apiece in the second and the Eagles held La Verne to just one goal. Although Concordia gave up four goals in the third and fourth, their four point third quarter followed by a strong finish of three goals was enough to fight off La Verne.

Game 3: CUI 10, Whittier 9

What happened: Patrick Zsiros started out the Eagle offense with a goal in the first, and the Poets posted the tying goal with 28 seconds remaining on the clock. The score stayed even throughout the second, with both teams adding four goals. Although the Eagles were outscored in the third, a big fourth quarter forged the comeback win. Rojas scored just 23 seconds into the final period of play. Hosch had one 30 seconds later, but then Whittier worked up two straight goals. With 3:30 left, Zsiros buried one to the back of the net to even the score. Hosch's 1:22 goal sealed the 10-9 win.

Game 4: Pepperdine 13, CUI 5

What happened: The Eagles fell to the No. 8 ranked Pepperdine Waves day two of the Inland Empire Classic.

Game 5: CUI 13, Redlands 12 (OT)

What happened: Concordia closed out the weekend with an overtime win over the University of Redlands Bulldogs. Rojas, Zsiros, and Hosch each scored three goals. Moore had two goals from four shots and Snyder and Mundell added one apiece. De La Mora made 13 saves with one steal. The Eagles had a lead in the fourth, but the Bulldogs scored a late goal with 56 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime. After Mundell drew a foul, Hosch successfully buried a penalty shot to take the lead. De La Mora's save and a few missed Bulldog shots kept the pressure on the Eagles. After a Concordia timeout, Walker's steal secured the win.

The Eagles are now 6-3 for the season and play their next game on Friday at 7 p.m. against UC Irvine. The game is in Irvine, Calif. at the Anteater Aquatics Complex.
