The Men's Water Polo Team took on the Lancers in Riverside, Calif. Wednesday for a mid-week WWPA matchup. Concordia and Cal Baptist couldn't have delivered a tighter contest, with the Lancers edging out the Eagles 10-9 in the final 1:11 of play. The Eagles had 33 shots on goal for a .273 percentage and the Lancers tallied 34 and .294.
Although the Lancers posted the first point, Joshua Mundell evened things up. After giving up a second goal, Patrick Zsiros struck for the Eagles to set the game at 2-2. After a CBU exclusion, Cristiano Tomassetti buried a shot off the assist from Jake Snyder for the Eagles' first lead of the day. The Lancers scored one more to end the first quarter ahead 4-3.
CBU scored back-to-back goals in the second quarter, but despite the Eagles' attempts, they went scoreless.
Down by three, Johnny Lotero extended it to five for the Lancers with two goals. After a timeout, the Eagles regrouped and Messan Moore reduced the lead with a successful shot from Zsiros. With 6:42 left to play, CBU's Kyle Christian added another for the Lancers. But the Eagles were not done yet. They strung together five unanswered goals to tie the Lancers at nine with 1:38 remaining. With 1:11 on the clock, Tanner Shore scored the game winning goal for the Lancers.
Mundell led the Eagles with three shots and two goals. Angel Rojas had one goal, eight shots, two assists and three steals. Zsiros posted three goals with one assist and three steals.
Concordia is now 9-10 and 0-2 in the WWPA. The Eagles play again on the road September 30 in Santa Clara, Calif. against Santa Clara University at 12 p.m.
