Kang buries two in Eagles 3-1 victory

IRVINE, CALIF. — The Eagles Women's Soccer Team claimed its third PacWest victory over Fresno Pacific University. Reena Kang started the surge with back to back goals in the first half and McKenna Carrillo sealed the deal with one in the second, giving the Concordia the 3-1 win.

The match started slow with a shot for FPU in the second minute and no other attacks on goal until after eight minutes of play. Carmany Jones took the first three shots of the game for CUI, two landed wide left and the other wide right.

Kryssa Johnson placed a shot on goal, giving FPU's keeper her first save of the game.  Concordia seemed to have more bodies on the ball in the offensive third of the field, inching closer to the back of the net with each forward drive.

In the 33rd minute, Fresno Pacific committed a foul against the Eagles giving Megan Matchett a free kick about 35 yards from the goal. Matchett sent a beautiful ball into a congested box and found the head of Reena Kang. Kang redirected the pass over the keeper and into the front left netting for Concordia's first goal and her second of the season.

Five minutes after the Eagles successful offensive drive, Kang struck again. Megan Hussey dribbled up the left flank of the field and played a cross right through the FPU defenders. Kang received the ball at her feet, took a control touch and sent a perfectly finessed pass to the bottom left corner of the net. The first period ended with FPU trailing Concordia, 2-0.

In the second half, Fresno Pacific seemed to find a surge of energy. The speed of play picked up and in the 53rd minute, FPU produced its first goal of the game. The Sunbirds forward received a cross and sent the ball into the bottom left corner to put her team on the board.

The Eagles didn't let up. In the 85th minute, Concordia gained a free kick at the top of the key from a Sunbirds foul. McKenna Carrillo capitalized on the error and buried a shot into the top right corner of the net, securing the Eagles win 3-1.

Concordia Women's Soccer hits the road for a PacWest match up against Cal Baptist University on October 4th. Kickoff in Riverside, Calif. is scheduled for 1:00pm.
