Women’s Volleyball Swept by No. 7 Lancers

The visiting California Baptist Lancers made quick work of the Eagles on Saturday night, defeating Concordia in straight sets (25-19, 25-12, 25-20).  The Lancers controlled the match with their strong defense and offense, paired with a handful of Eagle errors.

Concordia got on the board first in the first set with three straight points including an ace from Riley Gill.  The teams traded points until CBU went on a five-point run to take a 16-10 lead.  The Eagles gained a little momentum from back-to-back Rachel Flynn kills to bring the score to 17-14, but the Eagles dropped set one 25-19.

The Eagles scored two points to open the second set and the Lancers with three of their own to take the lead.  Cindy Tran tied the score at seven but the CBU offense answered back in a big way, scoring seven straight on three kills and two aces.  The Lancers went on a six-point run to stretch their lead to 23-11 before taking the set 25-12.

CBU took control early in the third set as they scored five unanswered points to take an 8-2 lead.  Three straight Lancer errors brought the Eagles back within striking distance as the deficit was cut to 20-14.  Trailing 24-16, Concordia went on a four point run sparked by a kill from Amber Rose as the Eagles battled back to 24-20 before the Lancers closed out the match with a 25-20 win.

Flynn led CUI with eight kills and eight digs.  Tran and Rose also chipped in eight kills and Riley Gill had seven digs.  Jessica Diederich led with 15 assists and Logan Grove had 10.

The Lancers shutdown the Eagles offense, holding Concordia to a hitting percentage of .096.  Concordia falls to 0-5 in PacWest play, as Cal Baptist remains undefeated.

Concordia travels to San Diego on Thursday to battle for their first conference win of the season.  The Eagles will take on Point Loma at 7 p.m.
