Concordia shows encouraging effort in loss to UCSD

LA JOLLA, CALIF. — The Eagles women soccer team fell short of their first win of the year against No. 9 UC San Diego Tritons on Tuesday night.The Tritons took the victory 3-0 on their home turf.

HOW IT HAPPENED

1st Half

  • Carmany Jones took the first shot for the Eagles at 9:28 but was blocked by UCSD keeper.
  • Two shots were recorded for Kara Gilchrist, one wide left and one more on goal but it was saved.
  • Kryssa Johnson and McKenna Carrillo also took a shot each for Concordia. Johnson's shot was on goal and Carrillo's sailed over the net.
  • In the 33rd minute, UCSD's McCarthy put the Tritons on the board with a top right corner goal. 
  • A period ending shot attempt by Jones was saved. This was her second shot on goal of the half. 
  • The Eagles placed six shots in the first half, UCSD shot eight. 

2nd Half

  • Jones got an early shot on goal for Concordia, but it was saved by the UCSD keeper.
  • In a strong offensive attack, Marianna Maldonado banged one off the crossbar. She hit a follow up shot three minutes later but it was was denied by  UCSB keeper. 
  • Isabella Angotti-Jones and Rachel Edelstein posted shots in the 63rd and 65th minutes, but their attempts were blocked and sailed high over the net.
  • Gilchrist got her head on the end of a corner kick by Maldonado in the 70th minute. The ball landed wide left. 
  • Johnson recorded an end of second period shot that was saved by the UCSD keeper. 
  • UCSD scored at 85' and 89' to seal the deal. 

NEWS AND NOTES

  •  The Eagles had 14 shots on goal, making this their third game of the season with double digit shots.
  •  This match was only the schools second meeting of all time. The teams first met in a 2015 preseason match.
  •  UCSD is ranked No. 9 in the preseason national poll. 

UP NEXT 

Concordia Women's Soccer will strive to receive its first win on September 8th against Cal State University, Dominguez Hills. Kick off is scheduled for 7p.m. in Carson, Calif.
