Eagles fight back in four against No. 11 San Bernardino

Box Score

When Concordia dropped the first set of the West Region Crossover Tournament in Anchorage, Alaska, the Eagles weren't phased. Instead, they fought back to defeat No.11 Cal State San Bernardino in four sets.

Outside hitter, Rachel Flynn, proved why she was named tournament most valuabel player at the Labor Day Invitational last weekend. The senior posted a .458 hitting percentage with 12 kills and only one error. She also added three aces, nine digs and one solo block.

Amber Rose provided offensive fire power to accompany her defense at the net. The middle put down seven swings and six blocks. Hailey Gaines also had a productive night. The right side sent 11 down for  .235 attack percentage. Madeline Deters led the Eagles with 16 digs and Jaclyn Brown was close behind at 15.

Although Concordia came out to a slow start, the team steadily improved on its set one hitting percentage of -.087. In game two, they improved to .270 and slowed the Coyotes from .333 to .211. The Eagles began to build momentum on a Gaines kill followed by a Flynn ace. At 14-12, the Coyotes called a timeout. San Bernardino battled to the twenties, but a kill from Kyra Auten ended it.

Erica Anthony pushed Concordia to an early lead with a three-point serving run to put the Eagles up 7-3. A kill from Rose and a service ace from Brown extended the Eagle lead to six. While the Coyotes continued to score points, Concordia never let them within three the remainder of the game en route to a 29-19 decision.

Set four saw the Eagles contain the Coyotes to a .095 hitting percentage and only nine kills. These numbers couldn't match Concordia's 17 put aways for a .220. Gaines got the game rolling with four kills to set the Eagles ahead 6-3. Brown, Auten and Tran also participated in the offensive frenzy to help Concordia tie the game at 17 apiece. Brown's service ace and Flynn's kill forced the Coyotes to spend a timeout. The Eagles didn't let off the gas and earned two more points on a Coyote error and an ace from Brown. While the Coyotes crept within two one back-to-back service aces, Flynn punched a kill to get Concordia within two of the win. Tran and Gaines buried two balls to give Concordia the 25-21 win.

The Eagles, now 4-0, return to Alaska Airlines Center Friday at 1:30 p.m. pst against the Chico State Wildcats.
