Volleyball Recap: Eagles lose two at West Region Showcase

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

During day two of the West Region Showcase, Concordia Women's Volleyball went head-to-head with Chico State and Western Washington.

The Eagles were edged out by the Wildcats in four sets 23-25, 22-25, 25-17, 21-25. Chico State contained the Eagles to a .159 hitting percentage throughout the match.

Rachel Flynn had 13 kills with 11 digs and two blocks. Hailey Gaines put away 12 and Cindy Tran finished the match with 10 of her own and four blocks. Madeline Deters led the match with 23 digs.

Concordia came out of the gate strong in set one with an early 5-1 lead. But the Wildcats went on a 5-1 scoring run to tie the game at seven. Another four point Wildcat run put them ahead 13-9. Although the Eagles tied the game at 17, Chico State never relinquished its lead.

In set two, the Eagles started strong again with a 4-1 lead. But another 7-1 Wildcat scoring run switched the pace of the game. Down 24-18, kills from Flynn, Kyra Auten and a service ace from Riley Gill helped Concordia creep within two, but the Wildcats finished set two on a kill.

Game three was the charm for the Eagles in this match. They surged to a 5-0 advantage on two kills form Gaines and one from Flynn. After giving the Wildcats one point, they generated four-straight to take the 9-2 lead. After a few Wildcat errors, a kill from Amber Rose put them up by double digits. Late in the game, the Wildcats built momentum - but the Eagles won four consecutive points for a commanding 25-17 win.

To start game four, the Eagles took the initial lead again. But Chico battled back to tie the game at eight. The two teams traded points until a four point run separated them, leaving the Eagles back 12-18. Rose ignited a five point run and an ace from Deters and a kill from Tran got them within two. But following a Chico State timeout the 'Cats won two points and the match.

Following Chico State, the Eagles met up with Western Washington University.

Despite out digging and racking up more kills, the Vikings were victorious over the Eagles in four sets.

Tran led the match with 15 kills and a .361 hitting percentage. Rose tallied 10 kills with zero errors for a .588 attack percentage and three blocks. Marcela Frazzoni posted 21 kills and Erica Anthony added 17.

The game started out as a tightly fought contest until the Vikings went on a 7-2 scoring run to take the 15-9 lead. Concordia generated energy mid-game on kills from Brown, Tran and Flynn to force a WWU timeout down just one point. The Vikings capitalized on a few Eagle errors to win 25-21.

Six kills started game two for the Eagles from four different Eagles. The offensive strength carried on through the set. Concordia combined for a .349 hitting percentage from 19 kills  to win 25-21.

In the final two sets, the Vikings reduced the Eagles' hitting percentage to .140 in game three and .021 in game four. Western Washington won sets the final two games 25-21 and 25-17.

The Eagles, now 4-2, face University of Alaska Anchorage Saturday at 11:30 a.m. to close out the tournament.
