In their first meeting of the 2017-2018 season, the Eagles took down the Point Loma Sea Lions for the first time in eight years. Thursday in CU Arena, Concordia attempted to make it two in a row. Despite a close first half, the Sea Lions secured a 76-60 PacWest win over the Eagles.
Defensive fight in the first: The opening half was a defensive fight between the Eagles and Sea Lions, with both teams combining for just 20 points in the first quarter. Michaela Vanderklugt sunk a three-pointer to get the Eagles going and Walters followed up with five, including a three-pointer. Â In the second period, Point Loma ventured on a 10-2 scoring run to build a 28-21 lead entering the break. Walters helped the Eagles stay in the game with 10 points, making 2-3 shots from behind the arc.
Sea Lions settle in: Walters struck first in the third with a three after two scoreless minutes of play. Sydney Peterson continued to cause trouble for the Eagles, adding her fifteenth point of the game for the Sea Lion 33-24 lead. Freshman Reilly Walsh was sent to the line for CUI and made both of her free throws to cut the deficit to seven, but the Sea Lion defense strung together a series of stops to stay ahead by ten. Concordia built energy entering the final quarter and trailed 38-44. Riley Friauf drew a charge to gain possession and Walters drove for a layup. Friauf kept the momentum alive and found her way to the basket for two more, but Point Loma pressed back with a three-pointer for the 47-42 lead. Despite the Eagles' efforts, Point Loma, led by Peterson, prevailed with a strong 32 point fourth quarter.
Eagle Eye: Walters led the Eagles with 19 points, three assists and four rebounds. Vanderklugt added 11 with seven rebounds and two steals. Kennedy Fulcher also had seven rebounds with seven points and a steal.
What's next : Saturday, Concordia and Cal Baptist face off for the first time this season. The Lancers, 8-9 overall and 5-4 in conference, will play in CU Arena at 5:30 p.m.Â
