Coming off a win over nationally-ranked CSUN on Friday night, Concordia headed to La Jolla, Calif. to take on UC San Diego but ultimately fell in four sets by a score of 26-28, 28-26, 25-18, 25-23.
Jonathan Predney led the team with 15 kills and two aces while Raymond Barsemian neared a triple-double with 14 kills, nine digs, and seven blocks. Chandler Gibb led the offense as he dished out 45 assists and was one dig shy of his third straight double-double with nine. Darcy Taig came in off the bench and sparked the team and hit .500 with 11 kills and five blocks.
The Eagles saw themselves down early 10-6 before going on a 7-2 run to take the lead at 13-12. Their lead did not last long as UCSD returned with a run of their own to go ahead 19-15. Down 23-21, kills by Barsemian and Predney tied it up before teams traded points ending with back-to-back blocks by Taylor Falduti and company that earned them the set in overtime.
It was another test in the second as UCSD was able to take over with its offense with 18 kills, hit .316 and capitalized on six CUI hitting errors. The Tritons had a lead at 14-11 before the Eagles forced their opponent into a timeout after a 5-0 run consisting of three UCSD errors and kills from Barsemian and Predney. Again, it was a tight ending to the set as the Tritons fought off two set points before taking it 28-26 on a block.
The third set was yet again close as it was back-and-forward between the two teams leading into a 14-all game. UC San Diego pulled away to 17-14 forcing Concordia into a timeout and putting in subs Logan Glave and Owen Chun, who made their CUI debuts to help kill the momentum. UCSDÂ service errors and kills by Falduti and Taig crept CUI closer, but it wasn't enough.
Concordia started off hot in the fourth as they came out with a 10-5 lead. Small runs by UC San Diego brought them back into the set, tying the game up at 18. It was a tight game until end but the Tritons were ahead 23-21 before a block by Falduti and Barsemian and a Concordia kill tied it up. However, it was a CUI service error and a UCSD kill that sealed the match.
Concordia s now 2-1 on the season while the Tritons improve to 5-1. The Eagles return to CU Arena on January 24th as they face their inner-city foe UC Irvine at 7 PM.
