The Concordia men's volleyball team started their week off with a four-set victory over Hope International in which they nearly doubled the amount of kills as the opposing Royals. The Eagles had a 67-34 kill advantage, which earned them the win by a score of 24-26, 25-21, 25-19, 25-21.
Hunter Howell put on a show, hitting .643 and notching five blocks to go along with his career-high 20 kills -- a tally that ranks second all-time in a four-set match and the highest amount of kills for a middle blocker in Concordia history. Jonathan Predney followed that with a 15 kill, nine dig performance while Raymond Barsemian had 13 kills. Chandler Gibb collected 50 assists and six digs and Jacob Weiser had a season-high 12 digs.
The Eagles opened up the match with back-to-back kills from Alec Krilis, who earned his first start of the season. The two teams traded points until Concordia pulled ahead with a 4-0 run behind kills from Howell and Barsemian and two Hope International errors. The Eagles led for the majority of the set until the Royals tied it up at 23-23. Howell collected a kill for set point, but Hope International fought their way to the end, taking the last three points of the set to take the lead in the match.
After the Royals jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second, both teams sided-out the next 18 points. The Eagles then soared out to a 15-11 lead on a 6-0 run consisting of kills by Predney and Barsemian and blocks by Howell, which forced Hope International into a timeout. Small runs by the Royals brought them within one at 21-20, but Eagles' head coach Shawn Patchell put in the double sub of Isaiah Kaaa and Darcy Taig to give Concordia a bigger block. Taig contributed to a pair of blocks as the Eagles finished the set on a 3-0 run, tying the match up at one set a piece.
Similar to the other sets, Concordia and Hope International were neck-and-neck throughout the third set until the Eagles pulled out a mid-set run, giving them the 15-11 lead. Concordia was up 22-17 before the Royals came within three, causing an Eagles timeout, but three straight points from Concordia put them ahead 2-1 and one set away from the win. Five Eagles contributed at least two kills in the set as Predney lead with four.
Taylor Falduti made a grand entrance into the match as he made his first appearance on the night in the fourth set, where he put up two blocks and a kill to give Concordia the 3-1 lead. It was then the other middle blocker, Howell, who earned all five of Concordia's next points on kills making it 9-6. The Eagles had their largest lead of the match at 16-10 before the Royals went on a 7-2 run to come within one. From there it was hit or miss for the Eagles as they scored their points on kills but conceded points with errors, before the Royals ended the match on a service error.
The Eagles earn their third win on the season, bringing them to 3-2 overall, while Hope International falls to 1-4. The Eagles now head on the road where they will face the No. 1 Long Beach State 49ers in the Walter Pyramid at 7:00 PM on February 2nd.
