Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Emily Duran

Eagles ousted in overtime by Sea Lions

For the second game in a row, Concordia Men's Basketball went to overtime against its PacWest opponent. Wednesday, the Eagles and the Point Loma Sea Lions sent the game into overtime after a 63-63 deadlock after two halves of play. Despite the team's efforts, the Eagles were sent home with a loss after Point Loma posted 13 points in the five minute overtime period to claim the 76-68 win.

The First Half Comeback: After falling behind 11-0, the Eagles dug themselves out of the hole with the help of three-point shots from Mike Mellinger, JT Roach and Tyler Lacour. A few layups from Tad Dufelmeier and free throws from Geoff Gerlach put the Eagles within four, and a jumper from Denzel Holt evened the game at 30-30. Gerlach continued his productive night with a layup on the pass from Dufelmeier to claim a two-point lead entering half time. Offensively, the Eagles turned things around and shot 40 percent from the three-point range and 85.7 percent from the free throw line.

Gerlach Goes Off: In the second 20 minutes of play, Gerlach found his rhythm and delivered 13 points for the Eagles. In addition, he tossed in three rebounds while shooting 6-7 from the field. Tied at 42-42, the Sea Lions found separation and built a seven-point lead. Gerlach's work in the paint helped the Eagles gain on Point Loma, and a deep shot from Roach followed by two free throws from Brian Chambers gave Concordia a two-point advantage. The game continued to flip back and forth, but with 1:13 to play and the Eagles down by three, Dufelmeier hit a three-pointer to tie the game for the seventh time in the second. After a Sea Lion sunk back-to-back free throws, Chambers' bucket with 14 seconds to play sent the game to overtime.

Sea Lion's Offense Surges : With five minutes on the clock, the Eagles entered the second overtime in a row. The Sea Lion's offense outscored Concordia 11-5 to claim the PacWest win.

Eagle Eye: Gerlach grabbed five rebounds and led both teams in scoring with 22 points for a career high. Dufelmeier dished out seven assists with 15 points. Chambers led the defensive charge with four steals.

What's Next: The Eagles, now 9-6 and 3-4 in conference, play Fresno Pacific on Friday in CU Arena. The matchup is set for 7:30 p.m. in Irvine, Calif.
