Two Eagles post double double’s in win over Point Loma

POINT LOMA, Calif. —The Concordia Women's Basketball team (8-5, 5-2 PWC) hit the road on Wednesday night for a PacWest contest against the Point Loma Sea Lions (8-5, 3-3 PWC). The Eagles took down Point Loma 78-70 for the first time in eight years. 

Michaela Vanderklugt and Riley Friauf posted double double's on the night. Vanderklugt led the Eagles with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Friauf posted 14 points and 13 rebounds. Montana Walters had 22 points and 3 assists. 

Vanderklugt got the Eagles on the board in the first minute with a three-pointer. Concordia continued to pressure the Point Loma defense with layups by Friauf and Reilly Walsh. Walters rounded out the first period scoring with a three- pointer. The Eagles led the Sea Lions 20-17.

In the second period, the Eagles offense was kick started with another three-pointer by Taylor Rarick. PLNU followed soon after with a jumper, attempting to cut down the Eagle lead. Breaking through, Vanderklugt tossed another layup and the Eagles led by seven points. 

Back-to-back three-pointers by Walters and Vanderklugt opened up the Eagles lead to 11 points. The teams headed to halftime with the Sea Lions trailing 38-27. Vanderklugt posted 17 points in the first half. 

A couple Eagles' layups started the second half, followed by a couple from Point Loma. Kennedy Fulcher drained a three-pointer four minutes into the third period. Following suit, PLNU's Roya Rustamzada hit a three-pointer 25 seconds later. 

Two more Eagle three-pointers from Walters and Portia Neale closed out the third period with Concordia leading 58-48. 

With her fourth deep shot of the game, Walters started the fourth period on a high note. The Sea Lions fought back with back to back deep shots and a layup. Free throws by PLNU cut the Eagles' lead at two points, 63-61. 

But Walters answered again. She hit another three with five minutes remaining in the game to put the Eagles up 69-65. Six sets of free throws rounded out the scoring for the final period en route to Concordia taking down Point Loma 78-70 for the first time in eight years. 

The Eagles return to CU Arena on Friday, January 5th for a PacWest matchup against Fresno Pacific University. The game begins at 5:30pm.
