The Concordia Eagles outscored the Santa Clara Broncos 8-6 after intermission Thursday but the visitors were able to fend off the Green and Gold and hang on for a 14-11 victory.
Christian Bowley opened the scoring midway through the first period after both teams were held scoreless in the initial three minutes. Mac Carey however righted the ship for Santa Clara and tallied two of his game-high six goals to give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
After falling behind 9-3, the Eagles opened the second half with two quick goals to get back in the contest.
Marius Jakimcikas found the back of the net and assisted on
Austin Barton's goal less than 30 seconds later to help the Eagles claw within 9-5.
Mitchell Iunker then helped the Green and Gold close the quarter with a goal and an assist. That made it 11-7 Broncos heading into the fourth.
Messan Moore notched two of his three goals in the last period to help lead the final push. Â His third goal featured a beautiful spin move around a defender in which he was able to box out his opponent before timing a perfect shot to the left corner.
Patrik Zsiros also tallied a pair of fourth quarter goals to cut the deficit before the Eagles ran out of time.
"We don't want to exchange goals when we get behind, but I'm glad they fought back and didn't give up," said Concordia head coach
Dreason Barry. "We need to make more defensive stops if we are going to be successful."
Senior
John Roberts and junior
Nick Walker each added a goal for the Eagles. Goalie
Alfredo De La Mora racked up 12 saves and did everything he could to keep his squad in the game.
The Concordia men's water polo team will hold Senior Day during their Code Yellow event this Saturday, Oct. 27 at noon. The Code Yellow match will be played at Northwood High School and will be against conference foe Loyola Marymount.
"It's another important game and it will be fun celebrating the seniors in their last home game," said Barry.
