The Concordia Eagles men's water polo team took on the Loyola Marymount Lions on Saturday in their final home game of the season and the final game for the six CUI seniors.
Alfredo De La Mora,
Daniel Castagnola,
Alberto Gonzalez,
John Roberts,
Alex Ramirez and
Doug Kazmier were each honored in the Senior Day ceremony before the game, and each was looking for one final home win. After gaining control on the opening sprint, CUI quickly scored on their first possession. Just 23 seconds into the game, Patrick Zsiros scored on a pass from
Marius Jakimcikas and the Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
The rest of the 1
st quarter didn't go as well. LMU scored five unanswered goals to take a four goal lead at the end of one. The 2
nd quarter started much like the 1
st quarter. Just 22 seconds into the quarter, Jakimcikas found Zsiros again and the Eagles cut the lead to three. Jakimcikas continued his big 1
st half three minutes later by scoring a goal off of a pass from Christiano Tomassetti to bring the score to 5-3. The Lions responded by scoring two goals of their own before the end of the 1
st half.
Trailing 7-3 at halftime, the Eagles had plenty of work to do in the 2
nd half to come away with a victory. The team struggled during the 3
rd period, but then bounced back to play a solid final period. It wasn't enough, however, and they couldn't overcome the early deficit. In the 3
rd quarter, the Lions scored twice and held the Eagles off the board. In the final period, Zsiros added three more goals,
Daniel Castagnola scored a goal, and
Nick Walker collected two assists. Final score- LMU 12, CUI 7.
Eagle Eye: Zsiros led the way with five goals. Jakimcikas finished with one goal and two assists.
What's Next: The Eagles take on California Baptist on Thursday, November 1 in the regular season finale at 6 PM in Riverside.
