After beginning the 2018-2019 season with two straight games on the road, the Concordia University Irvine women's basketball team played its home opener on Thursday night.Â
The Eagles took on the Cal State San Marcos Cougars at CU Arena in search of their first win. In the opening quarter, the Eagles struggled from the field but tight defense helped keep them in the game. The Eagles shot just 36.4 percent from the field, but knocked in seven early free throws.Â
Jasmine Rachal led the way with six first quarter points.
At the end of one, the Eagles trailed 19-15 but then the Cougars opened up a double digit lead by halftime after outscoring CUI 19-11 in the second quarter. CSUSM shot 53.8 percent in the second quarter and 48.3 percent in the first half. Baylee Olsen led the way for the Cougars with 12 first half points. Meanwhile the Eagles shot just 36.4 percent from the field and trailed 38-26 at the break.
In the third quarter, the Cougars outscored the Eagles 21-12.Â
Jasmine Rachal was strong for the Eagles all game and would lead the team with 16 points while
Michaela VanderKlugt finished with 14. But at the end of three quarters, the Cougars led 59-38.Â
The Eagles hung with the Cougars in the final period, but it was too late. When the final seconds ticked off, the Cougars came out with the win, 76-53.
The Eagles return to the court on Wednesday, Nov. 21 against Cal Poly Pomona. The game will be played at CU Arena and tip off is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.Â
