Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Ben Rosehart

Knuckles Keys First Half Explosion In CUI's Second Straight Win

Sonoma, Calif. – Kayle Knuckles scored 18 of his game-high 20 points in the first half and the Eagles sank 13 treys before the break to help the Concordia University Irvine men's basketball team throttle San Francisco State 75-55 on Saturday afternoon.

Jamel White and Brian Chambers each added 13 points as the Eagles (3-4) earned their second straight win at the Ron Logsdon Classic hosted by Sonoma State.

After missing his first three-point attempt, Knuckles drilled his next five tries from downtown to help CUI build a double-digit lead.  As a group, the Eagles sank 13 of their first 19 attempts from long distance to open up a 25-point advantage by intermission.  The Eagles shot a blistering 68 percent from downtown in the first half and finished the game 16-for-34 overall from three-point land (47 percent).

"I think teams are surprised when we make shots," said head coach Ken Ammann. "We are not. We know we didn't shoot the ball very well the first couple weeks and knew we could.  We moved the ball better and got better shots this week, which is why they started going in."

The Eagles stretched their lead to 31 points on two different occasions and also played fantastic defense for the second day in a row.  Concordia limited the previously undefeated Gators (3-1) to just 39.7 percent shooting from the field and only 29 percent from downtown (7-for-24).  The Eagles were so locked in defensively that they did not allow a single Gator to score in double digits.

"Our defense was outstanding and most importantly we played well together," added Ammann. "The lessons that came our way the weeks prior were many and very painful, but our guys did a great job learning from them which made it all worth it. We are close to being ready to compete in conference play which starts up in less than two weeks."

Knuckles and Chambers both made the All-Tournament Team after leading the Eagles to back-to-back wins.  Concordia defeated tournament host Sonoma State on Friday, 84-68.

Concordia returns to action for its home opener on Saturday, Nov. 24 when Antelope Valley visits CU Arena at 2:00 p.m. Please note the early start time as again this home game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. (not 7 p.m.)
