Eagles Open Up PacWest Play against Dominican

After playing their finest game of the young season thus far last week against the Cal Poly Pomona Broncos, the Eagles returned to the court on Thursday, taking on the 2-1 Dominican Penguins.

Behind a hot start from Jasmine Rachal, the Eagles jumped out to an early lead midway through the first quarter.  CUI was able to hold the tight lead into the final three minutes of the opening period when the Penguins made a run.  After falling behind 14-12, Dominican scored the final nine points of the quarter and led by seven at the end of one.

In the second quarter, the Eagles made a run of their own.  With the score 23-16 Penguins, Tiana Lowery knocked in a three pointer, Riley Friauf scored four, and Kennedy Fulcher added a layup.  The defense stiffened, allowing only two points during the stretch, and the Eagles tied the score at 25.  Just as they did in the first quarter, however, the Penguins made a run at the end of the second.  They scored nine of the final 12 points and took a 34-28 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter was all Dominican.  The Eagles struggled from the floor, while the Penguins continually knocked in shot after shot.  Dominican outscored Concordia 24-13 and stretched their lead to 17.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles played much better, but it was too late.  Dominican went on to win 77-58 behind a monster performance from Natalie Diaz, who finished with 41 points.

The Eagles had three scorers reach double figures, led by Friauf's 15 points.  Fulcher pulled down a team high 11 rebounds and Lowery finished with a career-high 12 points and two blocked shots.  Rachal chipped in with 11 points.

Concordia continues PacWest play on Saturday, taking on Academy of Art at 1:00 pm in San Francisco.
