Eagles Face First Overtime Challenge Against Cal State LA

La Mirada, Calif. - Brian Chambers scored 23 points and Kayle Knuckles added 14 but the Eagles suffered a tough 77-74 overtime loss Friday afternoon after a late rally by Cal State Los Angeles.

Matched up on the first day of the PacWest/CCAA Challenge at Biola University, the two schools were tied at 65 after each squad put together a run down the stretch.

Concordia trailed at halftime 34-31 but opened the second half strong.  With the score knotted at 38, Knuckles sank a trey and hit a layup to key a 10-2 Eagles spurt.  An Austin Clarke three-pointer a few minutes later pushed the Concordia lead to 56-45 just past the halfway point and then a pair of free throws by Chambers made it 60-48 Concordia with 5:30 remaining.

But then the tide turned in favor of Cal State L.A.  The Golden Eagles closed regulation on a 17-5 run to force overtime after Devin Means followed his miss at the rim and just barely beat the buzzer.

A trey by Chambers in overtime gave Concordia a brief 72-70 advantage but Means again had an answer. The pesky guard converted an off-balance layup and the ensuing free throw to complete a three-point play and put CSLA back in front.

Down three with the ball late, Concordia head coach Ken Ammann called timeout with nine seconds remaining in the extra period as the Eagles looked to set up a play to extend the game.  Knuckles had a chance to force double overtime with an attempt from the corner but his three-point shot missed and CSLA hung on for the victory.

Knuckles led the Concordia offense in the first half.  He scored nine before the break while Chambers came alive later with 16 of his 23 points coming after intermission.

Tyler Lacour and Rob Taylor each added eight points and Kyle Gray made all three of his field goals to chip in with seven points.

Concordia jumps right back into action on Saturday during the second day of the PacWest/CCAA Challenge. The Green and Gold will face Cal State San Marcos at 5 p.m. The Cougars lost to Biola 64-58 in Friday's matinee.
