Irvine, Calif. -
Jaclyn Brown came within two swings of tying the school-record for most kills in a three-set match and the Concordia University Irvine women's volleyball team easily handled Academy of Art University by a count of 3-0 Friday to secure its second win in a row.
Brown tallied 18 kills on the evening which tied her with former Concordia players Brooke Marino and Jessica Israel for fifth-most in a sweep. Â Marino still holds the Concordia women's volleyball record of 20 kills in a three-set match and
Rachel Flynn contributed 19 kills on three separate occasions in 2015.
Brown powered home eight points in the opening set, which Concordia dominated 25-15. Coming off
a thrilling 3-2 comeback victory at Dominican, Brown helped the Eagles set the tone early.
"I was just connecting with our setters really well and we had a lot of good digs which really gave us confidence to do what we needed to do," said Brown.
Brown came right back in the second set with six more kills as the Green and Gold (9-20, 8-13 PacWest) grabbed a 25-17 victory to make it 2-0.
The visitors kept battling in the third set, but the Eagles were able to joust the Knights (1-28, 1-20 PacWest) aside. Freshman
Danielle Davis provided a spark with a couple kills down the stretch and junior
Lauren Braden closed out the match with five straight serves which included two aces to complete the sweep, 25-16.
"I think we played amazing and everyone had a piece in it," said Brown. "We were putting the ball where the coaches were telling us too and that was big in executing those plays."
"Our side did a good job of being loud and I think that intimidated them," said libero
Clarice Buchanan,
who was named PacWest Defender of the Week this past Monday. "It felt good to play with the lead and we really executed down the stretch."
"We followed our game plan and came out with a lot of energy," added freshman
Hannah Tostado, who had six kills, five blocks and four assists to help the cause. "Knowing it was our second to last game of the season, we knew we had to finish strong."
Buchanan led the Eagles with nine digs and
Cambria Fernandez chipped in with eight kills.
Concordia will aim to finish the year on a three-game winning streak on Saturday, Nov. 10 as the Eagles welcome Holy Names to CU Arena in the season finale. Game time is slated for 5 p.m. in Irvine.
