VanderKlugt's Big Game Not Enough Against Azusa Pacific

The Eagles took on the high scoring Azusa Pacific Cougars on Wednesday looking for their second consecutive PacWest win.

Early in the game, APU was on fire.  In the first quarter, they shot 63.2 percent from the floor, building a big lead just minutes into the game.  The Eagles hung around, however, slowing down the APU offensive attack as the first quarter progressed.  Kennedy Fulcher got off to a hot start for the Eagles, scoring six points and dishing out three assists in the first quarter.  At the end of one, APU led 26-16.

In the second quarter, the Eagles picked it up on the defensive end and cut into the lead.  Michaela VanderKlugt scored nine points in the quarter to lead the Eagles.  At halftime, CUI trailed 43-34.

In the third quarter, the APU offense found their rhythm once again.  They scored 25 points in the third and opened up a big lead.  Through three quarters, APU led 68-51.

Despite a valiant effort in the fourth quarter, the deficit was too much to overcome.  The Cougars played at a fast pace, spacing the floor, finding open shooters, and setting up their full court press.  In the final quarter, VanderKlugt did all she could for the Eagles, and at the end of the game, she had a game high 23 points and a team high eight rebounds.  Riley Friauf added 12 points and freshman Jasmine Rachal chipped in with 11 points as well.  In the fourth quarter, the Eagles were able to hold the Cougars to just 40 percent shooting from the field, but it was too late.  The Cougars won 85-66 and the Eagles fell to 1-6 on the season.

CUI returns to action on Saturday, taking on Biola University at CU Arena at 5:30 pm.
