Eagles make it a sweep of the Silverswords

Saturday in CU Arena, the Eagles made it a sweep over the Silverswords of Chaminade Unversity with a 60-50 win. Concordia, now 13-9 and 10-6 in the PacWest Conference, is fighting for one of the final four open spots in the conference tournament with four games to play.

Nov. 30, 2017: In their first face off of the 2017-2018 season, the Eagles picked up their first PacWest win in a 65-47 decision. Michaela Vanderklugt led the team with 18 points and Sopavy Seng was close behind at 11.

Tonight - Chaminade challenges early: The Silverswords started the game with an early lead, but baskets from Kennedy Fulcher, Portia Neale and Michaela Vanderklugt prevented them from generating a lead. The teams continued to trade points to 15, with the Eagles going up by one on the free throw from Seng. The Silverswords responded with a point from the line to even the game at 16's entering the second period. Five minutes into the second, Montana Walters hit a deep shot to extend the Eagles' lead to four. Concordia's tough defense contained Chaminade at 19 and forced a Silversword timeout. Up by six, Walters tossed up another three-pointer to push CUI's lead to seven going into the half.

Eagles run away with it:  Vanderklugt snagged the first Eagle points of the second, converting an offensive rebound into a layup. The following play, Neale nabbed an offensive rebound and put it back up for a basket and the 39-30 Concordia advantage. Then, Reilly Walsh fed Fulcher for a quick layup, making the Silverswords call their second timeout. But the Eagle momentum didn't waiver. Concordia utilized hands on defense and swift ball movement to grow its lead to 14 entering the final 10 of play. Although the Silverswords stayed engaged the entirety of the game, they couldn't combat Concordia's play and fell 60-50.

Eagle Eye: Vanderklugt posted a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Fulcher tallied 14 and Walters added 12. Neale netted eight points, three assists and three rebounds.

What's Next: Monday, the Eagles will celebrate the final home game of the season in CU Arena. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. against the University of Hawaii at Hilo. The Senior Day Ceremony, honoring Concordia's eight seniors, will begin immediately after the game.
