Eagles Drop Two at Lancer Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Concordia Women's Water Polo Team dropped both games of the Lancer Invitational on Saturday, falling to George Washington 10-4 and Fresno Pacific 11-6.
Game One – CUI – 4, George Washington – 10
The game opened with a tight opening quarter. Both teams played lights-put defense throughout most of the period until GWU found a hole with 2:24 left in the quarter to take a 1-0 lead.
CUI evened the contest early in the second quarter when
Kelley Geurts found the back of the net less then two minutes in. The Colonials answered back in a big way, scoring three goals with less than two minutes in the half to take a 4-1 lead.
GWU picked up where the first half left off, putting the ball in the net 30 seconds into the second half. They went on to score two more goals in the quarter to extend their lead to 7-1.
After a Colonial goal to start the fourth period,
Shannon Graham found Geurts for the second Eagle goal of the game.
Ramsie Haskell and
Dailynn Santoro each added a goal in the quarter, but CUI could not overcome the George Washington lead and fell 10-4.
Geurts led the Eagles with two goals.
Game Two – CUI – 6, Fresno Pacific – 11
The Eagles got on the board first with a goal from
Jade Jette, assisted by
Elena Isogawa at the 6:34 mark. FPU responded 20 seconds later to even the game at one each. Isogawa and Haskell went back-to-back, scoring within 30 seconds of each other to give CUI a 3-1 lead. The Sunbirds fired a shot into the goal with 1:23 left in the first quarter to cut the Eagle lead to one.
Fresno Pacific used the momentum swing to score the first three goals of the second period to take a 5-3 lead. Haskell stayed hot, scoring her third goal of the day with two minutes remaining in the half to bring the Eagles back within one.
FPU scored a quick goal 15 seconds into the second half to push their lead to 6-4. They added three more before the end of the quarter to take a 9-4 lead into the fourth.
Jastine Vazquez and Haskell both scored in the final two minutes of the game, but for the second time in the day, the Eagles could not overcome the deficit and fell 11-6.
Haskell led the Eagles with four goals on the day, including three in game two.
Concordia will take on Santa Clara and Cal State East Bay on Saturday, Mar. 17 in Santa Clara. Games are set for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
