Concordia Softball closed out a productive week, taking one game of the double header against the Cal Baptist Lancers. After defeating the UCSD Tritons twice, CUI went 3-1 in the four day span against two top-25 ranked teams.
The Eagles are now 20-10 overall and 9-5 in PacWest play.
GAME ONE: Despite facing a tough California Baptist University Squad (No. 24), who entered the game with a very strong 21-4 record,
Callie Nunes was on the mound for the Eagles and she was again the difference maker.
Nunes went seven strong, pitching another complete game. For much of the way, she had a lead to work with. After two scoreless innings, the Eagles broke through in the top of the 3
rd inning. After a one out
Ryann Ferguson triple down the right field line, she was brought home on an interference play for the first run of the game. The Eagles added another in the 3
rd inning. After
Rebecca Borstmayer came in as a pinch runner,
Amy Eilefson singled and
Julianna Covarrubias pinch ran for her, the Eagles executed a double steal with Covarrubias taking second and Borstymayer breaking for home on the throw.
With a 2-0 lead, Nunes sailed to another win, giving up just two hits and one run.
Eagle Eye: Ferguson finished one-for-three at the plate with a run scored.
Kailey Palazzolo also finished one-for-three. Nunes went the distance, giving up just one run on three hits and striking out 11.
GAME TWO: In game two, the CBU bats were on fire. In the bottom of the 1
st inning, the Lancers brought in one run on an RBI double by Hannah Thieroff to right center.
In the 2
nd inning,
Grayson Harvey got back on track, shutting down CBU in order. In the 3
rd, however, the Lancers brought in another two runs, and in the 4
th, they broke the game wide open.
After the Eagles scored their first run of the game in the top of the 4
th inning on a Palazzolo solo home run, the Lancers brought in six runs on four hits in the bottom half of the inning.
With the score now 9-1 after four, the Eagles had work to do in order to avoid losing via run rule for the first time 2018. Though
Mackenzie Graham smacked a double down the left field line, the Eagles could do no more and fell by the score of 9-1.
Eagle Eye: Palazzolo finished one-for-two with a run and an RBI. Graham finished one-for-one with a double.
What's Next: The Eagles return to the field on Wednesday, April 4 at 4 PM against Azusa Pacific University on the road.
