Nunes Throws Second Career No Hitter in Concordia Sweep

In a busy week for the softball team, the Eagles continued their winning ways, dominating Holy Names University in a doubleheader.  Following two impressive performances on Wednesday, the Eagles' winning streak reached seven.

GAME ONE: In the bottom of the 1st inning in game one, the Eagles jumped out to a lead and never let it go.  Ryann Ferguson led off the day with a double to center field, and after a sacrifice bunt moved her up to third, Kailey Palazzolo brought her in on a sacrifice fly.

Two innings later, the Eagles got on the board again.  After Ferguson once again reached, this time on a walk, she advanced on a wild pitch and then scored on a Holy Names error to bring the score to 2-0.

In the 5th inning, the Eagles added insurance runs.  The Eagles' offense exploded for four more hits and added three runs.  Sarah Kretschmar, Lauren Lopez, Ferguson and Palazzolo each singled.  When Holy Names finally recorded the final out, the score was 5-0.

Once more in the 6th, Concordia got on the board.  After leading off the inning with a walk, Michelle Lieng eventually came around on a Mackenzie Graham sacrifice fly.

While the offense was having a fine day at the plate, Jordan Quinn had a stellar day on the mound, as well.  In seven innings, she completely dominated, forcing the Hawks to continually ground out when they could make contact.  She pitched a complete game for the Eagles, giving up no runs and earning her third win of the season.

Eagle Eye: Quinn pitched seven shutout innings, giving up just three hits, no runs, seven strikeouts and no walks.  Ferguson finished two-for-three at the plate with three runs scored and one RBI.  Palazzolo finished one-for-three with two RBI's.

GAME TWO: The Eagles played perhaps their best all-around game of the season in game two.  With Callie Nunes on the mound and the offense carrying red hot bats, there was nothing the Eagles couldn't do.

In the bottom of the 1st inning, the Eagles sent 11 hitters to the plate, collecting two hits, three walks and scoring five.  Ferguson walked, Brooke Jackson singled, Palazzolo doubled, Amanda Gjertsen was hit by a pitch, Sydni Dix walked, McKinsey Thorpe walked, Heather Nonora was hit by a pitch and the route was on.

With a 5-0 lead, Nunes pounded the strike zone and the Hawks couldn't touch her.  In the 2nd inning, she struck out the side.  In the bottom of the inning, the Eagles added two more.  Jackson, Gjertsen and Kaylee Dalgarn each singled and the Eagles brought in two more.

The score remained 7-0 heading to the bottom of the 4th inning when the Eagles rallied again.  Rebecca Borstmayer started the inning with an infield hit.  Stephanie Ruelas collected a hit, Gjertsen was hit by a pitch, Dalgarn added another hit and Dix hit a scoring fly ball.  The Eagles added two more, giving them a 9-0 lead and putting them in a position to win via run rule if Nunes could shut down the Hawks in the 5th

Nunes did shut down HNU in the 5th, as she did in every inning.  After hitting the opening hitter of the game, Nunes retired 15 of the next 16 hitters, giving up just one walk and no hits.  The no hitter is the second career no-no for Nunes, matching her February 3 no hitter against Western Oregon.  Though Nunes is just a freshman, she is already extremely accomplished.  Along with her two no hitters and elite ERA, she earned her 16th win of the season on Wednesday.

Eagle Eye: Nunes threw her second career no hitter, facing just two hitters over the minimum.  Jackson finished two-for-three with three runs scored.  Dalgarn finished two-for-three with three RBI's.

What's Next: Concordia returns to Eagles Field on Friday for a doubleheader against Notre Dame de Namur University.  Game one starts at 12 PM and game two will begin at 2 PM.
