Eagles Softball Keeps Winning

Entering the month of April, the Concordia softball team stood at 20-10.  Since then, they have won 14 of their previous 16 games.  After their 10 game winning streak was snapped over the weekend, Coach Crystal Rosenthal and the Eagles started a new streak.  After sweeping San Marcos, they've now won four in a row.

GAME ONE: The Eagles took game one in San Marcos and the winning formula has become familiar.  In the top of the 1st inning, Ryann Ferguson reached on an infield single, Brooke Jackson sacrificed her up to second and Amanda Gjertsen homered over the center field wall.  For Gjertsen, success at the plate is nothing new.  Entering Wednesday's game, she sported a .320 batting average on the year and was eight-for-eleven at the plate over her last three games.

After jumping out to a 2-0 lead, the Eagles' bats went quiet, and in the 4th inning, the Cougars came back.  In the 4th, CSUSM, scored three runs on two hits, two walks and an error.  The lead didn't last long.

In the next inning, the Eagles nearly repeated the formula from the 1st inning.  Ferguson led off with a hit, Jackson bunter her to second, and this time it was Amy Eilefson who brought her home on a home run to left field.

The Eagles went ahead 4-3 and didn't look back.  Grayson Harvey recovered and shut down the Cougars the rest of the way.  The offense added one more run in the top of the 7th, with the RBI coming on a two out, 15 pitch at bat by Kailey Palazzolo singling in Lauren Lopez.  The Eagles went on to win 5-3.

Eagle Eye: Ferguson continued her hot hitting, finishing three-for-four at the plate with two runs scored.  Brooke Jackson finished one-for-two with a triple and two sacrifice bunts.  Harvey pitched a complete game, giving up just two earned runs and earning a win.

GAME TWO: Like game one, the Eagles came out on top in game two but they did it in more dominant fashion.

Ferguson led off the game with a double to center field, Jackson followed up with a walk and then Eilefson walked.  In the blink of an eye, the bases were loaded for the Eagles.  Gjertsen brought in the first run on a sacrifice fly.  Jackson then came around to score on a squeeze play, with Palazzolo laying down the bunt.  At the end of one, the score was 2-0 Eagles.

The 2nd inning was much of the same.  After a hit by pitch, single and walk, the bases were loaded again.  The Eagles then scored on an error to increase their lead to three.
While the offense was generating traffic on the bases and bringing home runs, the pitching for the Eagles remained stellar, as it has been all season.  Jordan Quinn took the mound for CUI and was dominant.  She shut down the Cougars in short order over the first five innings, allowing just one hit in the 1st, one in the 5th, and retiring nine straight in between.

At the start of the 6th inning, the score was still 3-0 but the Eagles' offense wasn't finished.  Gjertsen led off with a walk and then Palazzolo and Michelle Lieng smacked back-to-back doubles to plate two more.

The five run lead was plenty for Quinn.  Though the Cougars drew two walks in the 6th, both runners were stranded and the shutout remained intact.  In the 7th, the Cougars got two more runners on base but they were again stranded and the final score was 5-0 Eagles.

Eagle Eye: Palazzolo finished two-for-two with two RBI's and a run scored.  Quinn pitched a shutout, giving up just three hits and walking two.

What's Next: The Eagles take on Azusa Pacific University on Friday at Eagles Field.  Game one begins at 2 PM.
