For the five Concordia seniors, Friday's doubleheader against Dominican University of California was the last time they suited up for the Eagles in a regular season home game.
Ryann Ferguson,
Amy Eilefson,
Kailey Palazzolo, Kayley Dalgarn and
Grayson Harvey have provided leadership for the Eagles, as well as consistent production both in the lineup and on the mound. For all their hard work, with the help of every Eagle of every class, CUI is in a position to win the PacWest Conference title. If the Eagles can win their final four games, they guarantee themselves at least a tie of the conference crown.
GAME ONE: Harvey took the mound for the Eagles in game one and received plenty of run support. In the bottom of the 1
st inning, CUI struck for five runs to open up a big lead. With runners on 1
st and 3
rd and one out,
Amanda Gjertsen grounded to short. Ferguson broke for the plate and scored. Eilefson was then brought in on a single.
Michelle Lieng then singled in two and
Mackenzie Graham doubled to right to bring in one more. At the end of one, the Eagles led 5-0.
Though the Penguins came back to knock in three in the top of the 2
nd inning, Harvey settled in and was dominant the rest of the way. She wouldn't let another run score.
While Harvey was shutting down the Penguins, the Eagles bats were also going quietly. In the bottom of the 6
th, however, they broke through and they did it in a big way. With one out and one on, Graham launched a long home run to left field that bounced off the batting cages well beyond the fence. Up 7-3, the Eagles weren't done.
Sarah Kretschmar walked, Ferguson doubled and then
Brooke Jackson knocked in two runs. Following Jackson's big hit, Eilefson doubled to right field. Up 10-3, the Eagles only needed one run to win via run rule. Instead, they got two. On a 2-1 pitch, Gjertsen smashed a long home run over the left field wall, not only clearing the fence and bouncing off the batting cages, but going even further than Graham's monster home run earlier in the inning. Gjertsen's walk off blast gave the Eagles their 41
st win of the season and 11
th win in a row.
Eagle Eye: Ferguson finished two-for-three with two runs scored. Palazzolo went one-for-two and scored twice. Harvey pitched six strong, earning her 13
th win of the season.
GAME TWO: While game one had all the fireworks, game two was another quality performance for the Eagles.
Jordan Quinn got the start at pitcher for CUI and she got the job done.
In the top of the 3
rd inning, the Penguins got on the board but Quinn shut them down the rest of the way, not giving up another run.
In the bottom of the 5
th inning, the Eagle offense took the lead and they didn't let it go. Kretschmar led off the inning with a walk and Ferguson and Jackson each got on to load the bases. Two batters later, Gjertsen singled to bring in two and then Palazzolo smoked a double down the right field line to score Gjertsen.
In the next inning, the Eagles kept it going. Kretschmar led off the inning with a walk, Ferguson singled, Jackson tripled, Eilefson singled and Gjertsen hit an opposite field home run to right field. When the inning came to a close, CUI added four more to take a 7-1 lead.
Quinn shut down the Penguins in the top of the 7
th inning and closed out the doubleheader sweep for the Eagles.
Eagle Eye: Jackson and Eilefson each finished two-for-four at the plate. Gjertsen finished three-for-four with four RBI's. Quinn pitched a complete game, giving up just two hits and one run.
What's Next: The Eagles take on Biola University tomorrow on the road. Game one begins at 12 PM and game two will start at approximately 2 PM.
