Eagles to Play for Seventh in GCC Tournament

LOS ANGELES – In their first game in the consolation bracket of the GCC Tournament, the No. 8 seeded Concordia Women's Water Polo Team fell to the No. 5 seeded Fresno State by a final of 11-4. With the loss, the Eagles will play for seventh-place in the tournament on Sunday against the No. 7 seed, Santa Clara, at 9:15 a.m.
The first quarter was a defensive battle between the two teams, with just one goal being scored between the two. The Bulldogs squeaked in the lone goal half way through the period to take a 1-0 lead in to the second.
After Fresno State scored the first two goals of the second period, Hanna Jordan dished an assist to Lindsey Heaney who scored the first Eagle goal of the game with 2:11 remaining in the first half. As the clocked ticked down, goalkeeper Madelynn Knust got the ball to Dailynn Santoro. She then scored, cutting the Bulldogs' lead to 2-4. Fresno State scored with two seconds left to head into halftime with a 5-2 lead.
The Bulldogs took advantage of a power play to begin the second half, stretching their lead to 6-2. Jordan answered 15 seconds later go cut the deficit back to three. The Bulldogs found the back of the net three more times to hold a 9-3 advantage over CUI heading into the final frame.
Trailing 11-3 with 1:35 remaining in the contest, Jastine Vazquez used an assist from Sierra Venegas to chip in one final goal for the Eagles, but the damage had been done as CUI fell 11-4.
As mentioned, the Eagles will play for seventh-place on Sunday when they square off with Santa Clara at 9:15 a.m. at the Burns Aquatic Center in Los Angeles.
