The Eagles volleyball team wrapped up its first week of the regular season with two more matches on Saturday.
Despite losing twice on Saturday, CUI saw a number of young players on the team step up on the court.
Freshman
Patience O'Neal showcased her power by collecting a team-high eight kills against Colorado Mesa.
After falling in the first two sets against the Mavericks 25-12 and 25-21,
Danielle Davis and
Cambria Fernandez also found a rhythm in the third set. Fernandez finished the game with six kills.
The game was tied on multiple occasions including 10-10, 15-15 and 17-17 before Colorado Mesa survived with a 25-22 win to complete the sweep.
Saturday was also CUI junior
Kylie Breitenwischer's birthday and throughout the nightcap fans in the stands sang her Happy Birthday from across the gym.
The Eagles finished 1-3 over the course of the two day tournament.
PacWest rival Azusa Pacific survived a tough match against Colorado Mesa earlier in the day in five sets. APU won the first two matches but then struggled to close out the pesky Mavericks.
Both teams had ample opportunities to pull away in the fifth and deciding set but APU ultimately prevailed 17-15.
Cal State Los Angeles was the only school to win all four of its games in the tournament. The Golden Eagles eked out the best match of the entire tourney with a five set thriller over Azusa Pacific in the penultimate game Saturday evening.
CUI will host the D2 West Region Showcase next weekend on Friday, August 31 and Saturday, September 1.
