IRVINE, Calif. — Eagles women's soccer (2-3, 1-0 PWC) hosted the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds (1-5-1, 1-2 PWC) in their PacWest conference opener at Eagles Field. Concordia defeated the PacWest preseason poll favorite 2-1 in double overtime with goals from Carmany Jones and Isabella Angotti-Jones.
The teams started the match playing jumbled soccer with not many forward attacks. A couple corner kicks from Mariana Maldonado and a header by Kryssa Johnson broke the ice and led the Eagles charge. Fresno's offense didn't pose a threat until 14 minutes into the first half with a shot that sailed wide.
Late in the first half, the Sunbirds found the back of the net. The attack came in the 37th minute from a dribble down the right flank and cross at the top of the box for FPU's Snow to finish the ball and get her team on the board.
In the second half, Concordia fought back. Shots by Katie Gast and Maldonado kept the Eagles in the offensive third. Cienah Reed took the ball at her feet and dribbled up the middle of the pitch, beating two Fresno Pacific defenders. Reed played a ball through the defense to land at the foot of Carmany Jones. The forward took a touch and netted the equalizer.
Concordia's second half goal sent the teams to overtime tied at 1-1. Both teams failed to produce a goal in the first overtime. Six minutes into the second overtime, Isabella Angotti-Jones took a free kick from 35 yards out.
"I just knew that there was four minutes left and I didn't want to play any longer. I knew I had to hit the ball hard and it would probably hit off somebody or somebody would get a touch on it," Angotti-Jones said.
She rocketed the ball into the box and a deflection off a Sunbird defender gave the Eagles the golden goal and their first conference win.
Concordia women's soccer plays their second PacWest competition of the week on Saturday September 22nd. The match is slated for 3:30pm.
