In a battle of Eagles on the pitch Saturday afternoon, it was the visiting flock from Cal State Los Angeles that walked away with a hard-fought victory.
Concordia goalkeeper
Mac Hutchins made his third straight start and came up with four saves.
But one player in particular proved to be a thorn in the Eagles side.
Cal State LA struck first when Norway native Robin Lindahl cashed in to give the visitors a 1-0 lead midway through the first half. Lindahl would wind up with a hat trick by the time the final buzzer sounded.
CUI threatened on multiple occasions but could not tally the equalizer.
In the 30th minute, CSULA's David Elizaga sent a cross into the box and Lindahl booted the ball into the back of the net for his second goal of the match.
Lindahl added a third goal late in the second half to provide the final margin as he personally did all the damage in a 3-0 decision.
The Eagles had some success on the attack with freshman
Luke Ryan up top.
The tall forward from Long Beach routinely boxed out his man but CSULA was able to prevent him from getting the ball most of the afternoon. He did provided a boost by breaking down two defenders and firing a shot just wide of the right post early in the second half.
Julian Font and
Connor Gordon each put one shot on goal but could not convert.
Concordia maintained an aggressive approach and racked up 12 fouls to CSLA's nine. CUI has averaged 16 fouls in its first three matches and in each outing has finished with more fouls than its opponent.
The Eagles return to action on Wednesday, September 12 when Cal Poly Pomona visits Eagles Field at 1 p.m. Â The Concordia women's soccer team will also play the Mustangs that day at 3:30 p.m. as part of a scheduled doubleheader.
